Just thought I would chime in with thanks for the Linux build, and share the experience.

I’m running RoonBridge on a RaspPi3, wirelessly, with USB Audio on an Audioquest Dragonfly.

I installed Jessie Lite from https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/

I updated to the 4.4 branch of Jessie Lite as suggested in this thread: High-res on RPi3 HDMI

I ran the three commands for the Arm version of RoonBridge via the Terminal (computer screen icon in the top bar in Raspian for the noobs: I count myself among you)

$ curl -O http://download.roonlabs.com/builds/roonbridge-installer-linuxarmv7hf.sh $ chmod +x roonbridge-installer-linuxarmv7hf.sh $ sudo ./roonbridge-installer-linuxarmv7hf.sh

I changed the Audioquest Dragonfly to the default Audio output via the Raspian GUI Settings. I couldn’t get the audio to output from USB while the HDMI cable was in, despite checking the raspi-config, under advanced options/audio to make sure it was on automatic detection (https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/raspi-config.md).

Unplugged the HDMI, power-cycled the Pi, and the Dragonfly appeared as an Audio Endpoint (along with the headphone jack and the HDMI which I’m not enabling).

I’m operating the Pi on my wireless network and not experiencing any of the Snap, Crackle, Pop sounds mentioned in this KB article: http://kb.roonlabs.com/Audio_On_Linux (maybe that got fixed in this lastest build of 4.4)

Controlling the whole thing from my phone is the icing on the cake.

I’m really interested in giving this setup a shot. However, I know what a Raspberry Pi is, but that’s about the limit of my knowledge. Where do I really start? Which Pi to buy? I’m on OS X and would use the Pi wirelessly. What else do I need? I’m reasonably comfortable poking around/tinkering with technology, I’m not uncomfortable in the Terminal on my MBP, but I’m by no means skilled there. I’ve looked at a couple of other links in the forum, but can’t find one that really starts from the beginning. Any direction/pointers/hand-holding would be appreciated!

I would advice against the Pi 1. It has significantly less processor power and less RAM than the other models.
The Raspberry Pi 2 and Raspberry Pi 3 cost about the same, so I’d pick the Raspberry Pi 3 (Model B) and would also get a hifiberry add-on card for better audio quality. The Pi3 has Wifi and Bluetooth builtin, but if this is not good enough you can still connect a wifi dongle (as you would need to do with the Pi2).
It will also support booting from USB devices and PXE (network boot) in the future.

UPDATE: The PI1 (and also the Pi zero) won’t even work as it has an ARMv6 CPU.

Thanks for that info. Is there only 1 Pi 3 Model B, or are there multiple manufacturers or other choices that I need to make? Do you recommend poking around on Amazon, or are there other sources worth considering? I’m in the US if that makes a difference. As I said, this looks interesting, but I’m going to require some hand-holding to navigate!
