HIFI Rose 159B new to roon new component

I have a better than most knowledge networking with admittedly large gaps. Been able to run a home network for quite a while. It’s not fancy. I recently installed a hi-fi rose 150 B as a streamer to replace a useless cocktail audio X 45.

The interface for the hi-fi rose 150 B is very sketchy and in order for it to work with an iPhone/ipad the head unit has to be powered up and down with each use, which is irritating. They also use a strategy of way too many music playback options in the app, which makes using just local files very cumbersome and frustrating.

In doing my due diligence, I believe Roon would be the solution for my needs. Play locally stored files controlling playback with a usable app. Not a big ask. I installed Roon on my iMac with current OS software, same Wifi network and an external hard drive hooked up to the iMac, containing my 1TB music library. The Roon server software instantly recognized the File location and populated the program beautifully. Looks like an interface I can work with.

The issue I’m running into is that I can’t make the Roon server find the hi-fi rose component. It sees my TV’s and every other device capable of working with music. I’ve turned on the SMB and file sharing capabilities on the rose unit. Dealer support states there’s a software switch to specifically turn on the Roon capability (which 150B is certified for), but I cannot find any menu with a toggle to activate the Roon ready designation.

I would really appreciate some direction in preparing the hi-fi Rose streamer to be recognized on the network. If I’m not able to do this then using Roon is a moot point, and I will cancel before my trial terminates. I don’t want to repeat the frustration suffered using the cocktail audio product.

As I browse through the form here, at the hi-fi Roon site and talking to my dealer, I have yet to find anyone who is satisfied with hi-fi roses ability to communicate with Roon. This is also true for disappointment expressed I regarding the Rose app. This is very disappointing, makes me realize how many shills there are on YouTube and related sites and wish I would’ve just spent the money on a very established product that wasn’t so sexy.

Thank you

I have no experience with HifiRose, but there is no such thing mentioned in the online manual.
What you could do, is check whether all devices are on the same subnet of your network. All IP addresses should have the same first three sets of numbers (like: 192.168.0.xxx).
You could also try to reboot every relevant device: router, switches, Roon Server (and the machine on which this is running), HifiRose…

The dealer probably meant you switch on roon ready in the roon app not the Rose app. I assume you have done this? It’s standard operating procedure in the roon app to enable any device.

If roon still cannot see the 150B then there is likely a networking issue. It’s not clear how you are connecting the Rose but you mention wifi in relation to other devices so I assume you have connected the SSID / password etc. via the wifi settings in the Rose?

I’m using a Rose RS150 and a RS250 primarily as Roon endpoints.
If you’ve configured the network in a correct way, the Rose devices should immediately shown in Roon as activatible Roon Ready devices.

Thank you. I have advanced my understanding of neteork troubleshooting a bit. When I enter into the router admin pages I can determine the router “sees” both the iMac (server) and Rose device. They are on the same WiFi network and have same subnet mask.

I will continue to tinker while the trial is available.

Knowing issue is solvable persistence and seeking expert help is a worthy expense of time and resources. My concern is the problem is not solvable and I’m wasting time. With the cocktail audio they upgraded the software to make he unit a brick for my purposes and it became unusable.

The reason I think it might not be solvable at t hi s time is in order to reestablish native app to Rose unit communication the Rose needs a hard reset after periods of inactivity. Soliciting advice on their forum acknowledges an issue to be fixed with software updates. This suggests to me their might be an intrinsic connectivity issue stymying my Roon attempts. If true, I don’t want to let my Roon trial Roon trial expire and pay for a service I can’t use.

I have yet to have someone state they have a Rose 150B running with success. The reviews are very superficial once you get into the units nitty gritty. If it is known to work it can be done on the other hand I don’t want to spend time on an unsolvable problem.

Again thank you for responding.

I have a Rose 150B. It is on 24/7. Rarely switch it off. Never experienced connection issues needing a hard reboot. It has been one of my primary roon endpoints for 2/3 years. No issues at all. Have you tried an ethernet connection if you are getting wifi dropouts?

I have a 250 and 520. Roon is the only thing that worked on them without running into Rose’s (many) bugs…

There isn’t anything you should need to switch on the Rose unit itself apart from ensuring that it does have a network connection to the same network.

I would start with checking that a) Rose itself sees itself having a correct IP address, b) can access network resources (e.g. Rose Radio works) and c) you do not have any device isolation settings configured for it in your router.

Then go into Roon/Settings/Audio and check that Rose shows up there. If it does, activate it and it should all work If it does not there’s a problem somewhere.

Note that while connecting your Roon core over WiFI might work (especially for testing) it is not a recommended configuration and is likely to lead to problems down the road.

Thank you. I know you are correct about hard wiring but in my situation its going to cause some stress

Appreciate the input
