Describe the issue

HomePod volume jumping to 51. I am running latest version of Roon and primarily a iphone, iPad, Mac user.

I have a two Homepods running as a stereo pair.
When running Roon on Mac or iPhone, the volume always adjust to level 51 without me seeting the controls. If I set the volume to 39 it jumps to 51. If I set the volume to 69 it jumps to 51.

This obviously makes my Homepods unusable with Roon because the volume is too loud.

Any workarounds or fixes planned?

Hello @cmonache,

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help in ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

Good morning! Thank you for your response.

I tried to a few times again at 8:46 AM CST.

It is happening with my paired HomePods called HOME OFFICE.

Hi @cmonache

I’m just a fellow music lover but have used Roon with HomePods before.

Are all your Apple devices on the latest version of iOS? Including the HomePods.

Also, just wondering if you have Lock Screen controls enabled. If so, try it disabled.

Another thing to look into, connect to the paired HomePods on your iPhone or iPad. Lower the volume to around 10% and disconnect from it. Reboot them (power cycle). By default they usual present themselves with Roon as set to 25% volume.

Now try again.

Hey @cmonache,

Thanks for the additional information here! In addition to @Mr.Flibble’s above test, I’d be curious to see if the same issue occurs when you have exclusive mode enabled as well as disabled - let me know if this is something you’d be able to test.

You can access this setting within your device setup settings when you have your devices grouped together into a single zone.

Can you also share a more specific step-by-step process of your issue? Does this happen no matter the remote device you use with Roon?

Thank you!

Hello,

I do not have “Enable Lock Screen Controls” turned on. This is set to no.

I rebooted the devices. But no difference.

I have not been able to find exclusive mode. Could I get some more details on where to find this?

The step to recreate a fairly basic. I select my paired HomePods, play a song at a low volume and then the volume at a random time, jumps to 51.

This happens from both the MacOS and iOS Roon controller.

This only happens with a stereo paired HomePod. This does not happen to any of my other single HomePods I play music through.

This also does not happen with my StereoPaired Sonos devices.

Hi @cmonache,

Thank you for the reproduction steps. We’ll work on reproducing this in-house.

While you have the zone you want to use exclusive mode with active click on the volume button.

On the menu that opens click the gear icon

That will open your Zone Settings. From there click Device Setup.

You should see the exclusive mode setting then. Please let us know if you have any trouble.

Sorry for lack of response. Have been caught up in travel and kids baseball tournaments.

I got back to testing some more and today I am not getting the jumps in volume to 51 related to the HomePods running in stereo paired mode.

I have not made any changes since our previous discussion.

Related to your previous advice:

I opened my zone:

I then go to device setup:

I still do not see anything called exclusive mode setting:

Hi @cmonache,

Glad to hear the volume jumps have stopped—thanks for letting us know! I should have mentioned this earlier, but it’s expected that you won’t see the option for Exclusive Mode when using networked speakers like your HomePods.

Since everything seems to be working now, I think the best course of action is to continue using the speakers as you normally would over the next few days and let us know if you see the volume jumps again. We’ll leave this thread open in the meantime in case anything changes.

Hi @cmonache,

We wanted to reach out to see how things were performing. This thread will auto-close after a few days of inactivity. Thanks!
