HomePods out of sync with AirPlay speakers using Roon on Synology DSM 7.2.2 (ref#0C9T04)

Describe the issue

Roon is 2.49 (1525) on Synology DSM 7.2.2 72806 update 3
HomePod 2nd gen and HomePod mini are 18.4.1
All speaker connected over wifi, NAS over ethernet, all on the same router.

The homepod (alone or both) is in a group with other airplay speakers. I had no problem playing them all together, they were perfectly synced. Since a few weeks (2 or 3), the 2 HomePod’s are always out of sync with any of my other speakers. “Hard” rebooting them doesn’t help.

Same grouping played with Airfoil is perfectly synced.

I saw similar issue in another post but no date for a solution is given, nor the workarounds worked.

I would appreciate any help

Best
Dirk

Hello @Dirk_Daems

Thank you for the details. To help us narrow down the issue, could you kindly clarify which specific device is having the sync problem?

  • Is it only the HomePod 2nd gen, the HomePod mini, or both?
  • Are you experiencing the sync issue when using the HomePods with other AirPlay speakers in Roon, or is the issue only happening when they are grouped together in Roon?

This will help us better understand where the issue is originating and assist in finding a solution.

Hi

Both HomePod’s have the problem, one of them with another airplay speaker (group of 2, Sonos for example) is always out of sync.
The 2 HomePod’s together in group are synced. When adding another airplay speaker, that one is out of sync with the HomePod’s and the 2 HomePod’s stay synced. Adding additional (not HomePod) speakers, they all are synced together and out of sync with the HomePod’s (still synced with each other).

Not sure to understand the configuration of your second question ?

Hi @Dirk_Daems ,

Thanks for those details. Can you please reproduce the issue, and note the exact local time + date + track playing and which device is out of sync? We’ll enable logging after getting this info to see if logs contain any clues regarding the issue, thanks!

01.05.25 08:50 streaming Qobuz Dusty Springfield The Look Of Love
the 2 HomePods are synced, the Ikea-Sonos bookshelf is out of sync

01.05.25 08:57 playing NAS ALAC alt-J Nara
the 2 Sonos’ are synced, the HomePod 2nd Gen is out of sync

01.05.25 09:05 streaming radio NRJ
setup 2 HomePods + 2 Sonos : very unstable, HomePod mini is cutting sound
when playing the 2 HomePods are sync and the 2 Sonos’ are sync, but out of sync between them
I have a lot of messages “waiting for the Roon server” and streaming is stopping.

01.05.25 09:13 playing NAS ALAC alt-J Nara
same setup as previous and same result, except no instabilities

Interesting… and strange:
McAfee finds nothing, SMB1 is not activated, DSM and packages are up to date
I don’t see what steps I can take to solve the issues, if I want to be on the safe side, should I delete the roon /Data folder?

Is it related to the airplay out of sync issue?

OK I activated my licence on my Mac and tested a group with a HomePod and an Airplay speaker: same issue they are out of sync!

Sounds exactly like the issue I reported here:

Yes I saw your topic, but there was no solution right?

no, unfortunately not. What’s really irritating is that airfoil and iOS airplay 2 works perfectly - as well as only non apple speakers or only HomePods via Roon.

Hi @Dirk_Daems ,

Apologies for the mix-up here, we took another look over your logs and while there are some issues with getting the logs opened, this appears to be a permissions issue, not a ransomware issue as previously thought, so your system should indeed be safe.

We have an existing development ticket regarding Airplay device synchronization, I have just added your report to the ticket. The ticket is in the dev team’s queue, but unfortunately, I can’t provide an exact timeline of when it will reach the top and work will be finished on the ticket.

If you’d like to help expedite the work on this ticket, we kindly ask that you submit a log set from your Roon Server so that we attach it to the ticket as well. You can find logs by using these instructions and upload them to the below link, and let know once uploaded, thanks!

Is there a way to follow the status of the ticket in dev team’s queue?

Hi @Dirk_Daems,
Sorry, but development tickets are for internal use only, and it’s not possible to make them public. That said, we’ll continue to keep you informed of any updates here in this thread.

Were you able to upload the logs that @noris requested?

Yes I uploaded the logs with my full name in the filename. Did it same day or next day.

Thanks @Dirk_Daems, we’ve shared them with the development ticket and will keep you updated as any new information is shared our way. Thank you! :raised_hands:

probably as expected with podOS 18.5 and Roon 2.51 (1534) the problem is still present

Hi @Dirk_Daems,

We haven’t had any updates on the development ticket tied to this issue, unfortunately.

That said, have you tested out either of the following steps:

  1. Adjust the resync delay on one of the endpoints that falls out of sync.
  2. Test out playing a lower resolution track, and see if the same issue occurs.

Thank you!

No I haven’t done that yet, what do you mean with lower resolution? With AirPlay it’s streamed at 44.1 anyway, no?

Hi @Dirk_Daems,

Yes, but if it’s a higher resolution track originally, then downsampling will need to occur, which could be causing some bandwidth issues.

Let me know the results if you’re able to test the above. Thank you!

tested again: the resolution of the track doesn’t make any difference
