How do Roon classify?

Hello, I am new to Roon and I am very surprised by the way Roon classify my records.
Roon V1.4 and Antipodes server V1.4, my records are on Antipodes, as Roon. My PC is W10 64.
I imported my music with my tags which I filled thru tagscanner to be sure.
The result is quite astounding. If I take Wagner for instance who is a composer, When I search for him I have 2 results : 1 for artist and 1 for composer.
If I click on composer, I have this :

Why 2 composers ? with different material each !
The first one

The second one :

Why in this second one he is a performer, in spite of the fact thas I wrote Wagner as composer on Tagscanner, and that it is ranked in composer in the first screen ???
If i take an exemple :

Kleperer conducts Wagner, the original tag is :

With Wagner as composer….
How do I manage with it ?
How can I have only ONE place for Wagner who has always been a composer and nothing else ?

Bois, Sadly, this is a byproduct (I think) of the errors in the database(s) Roon uses. Before the Composer tag came into wide use, apps used the Artist tag to show a composer credit. Some labels and/or databases still routinely classify composers as performers.

The “fix” for Roon might be to create some AI coding that caught such errors. But I suspect that would be difficult to say the least.

So, the onus is on the end user to catch and correct these flaws. In Roon, it can be done in bulk quite easily, although I certainly understand why you might resent having to do this.

Follow these steps:
Select Wagner the Artist button (the one you don’t want).
Scroll down, and click Select All Tracks (a bit of text on the right hand side). A track page will appear with all tracks where Wagner is tagged as Artist.
Select All (Command A) Tracks and Edit (button in upper right hand corner)
Select Edit Tracks/Remove Credits.
Find the tag showing Wagner as Primary Artist, and deselect it. (To be sure he is recognized as the composed, Add or make sure there is a tag, “Wagner as Composer” in the credits list.

This MIGHT get rid of all the Artist references, but if some persist, the problem is with the Album tags showing him as Primary Artist (these are separate and distinct from track Primary Artists). To delete these, select each offending Album (not tracks now, and I think this must be done one album at a time), Edit Album, and deselect any Wagner as Primary (Album) Artist reference. Remember that since you previously tagged each track with Wagner as Composer, the works will still be attributed to him.

You’ll know you are finished when Wagner as Artist button no longer appears. Good luck!

John is right , I suspect the only good metadata is the stuff you have control over

Classical metadata in general is sketchy, messy and often inaccurate. Not Roon’s fault but still a problem

Mike

Thank you for your help. As I listen mostly classical music, I have to manage more than 3000 albums… And t does’nt work always properly!

Have you had a look at MusiCHI Tagger, it has independent sources and adds a lot of value for me

At 20 euro it’s a steal, also a 30 day demo with no limits
