How Does Roon Know?

So, I’m still playing with Roon during my trial period (or should that be Roon’s probation period?) and, despite a GUI hitch I’ve hit, I like what I see & hear.
Something I’m uncertain about is how the licensing works: How does Roon know the license is valid? Does it ping a central server periodically or is it local timestamp on the core?

The reason I’m asking is to determine if the server running roon needs an internet connection or whether I can run it in an isolated network, anyone?

Roon needs to ping home to do its meta-data updating. It definitely pings home when you are logging into the server for the first time. I think this quote says it best:
