How to Backup Roon to 2TB Portable Hard Drive (ref#054ACG)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

Tell us what's going on

· Backup to 2 TB Drive
I have backups scheduled automatically every 4 days to my DS918+ 48TB Synology NAS; however, I'm doing a "fresh" backup because I want to switch over to Roon NUC that I built and I thought a fresh complete backup would be better from an integrity point. 16 hours into my backup on my NAS and counting I am seeking to figure out how I would backup to a 2TB portable Hard Drive. It has a USB C connection but I have adapters if necessary. Would I plug it into my MacBook Pro, my NAS? Please advise and provide any tips.

I would plug it into the NAS, because then it’s local to the Roon Server where the database is, which should be faster and the drive should probably automatically appear under Roon Settings > Backups > Backup Now > Select Location, I think.

Though I don’t have Roon on a NAS and it’s possible that you have to do additional things, like telling the NAS to mount the drive as a normal external storage drive. (When I attach an external drive to the QNAP, it asks me what I want to do with it: use as a NAS backup, add it as regular QNAP storage, or just mount as a normal external drive).

You could also attach it to the Mac, but then it’s remote as seen from the Roon Server and…

  • You have to configure a network share folder in macOS so that the drive becomes visible over the network.
  • In Roon Settings > Backups > Backup Now > Select Location, you have to choose Network Share and connect it to the shared folder on the Mac.
  • The backup will go over the network which will be slower (but not prohibitively slower if the database size isn’t huge).

Thank you @Suedkiez I’m creating a fresh backup on my NAS and I started about 18 hours ago. I have 40,000 tracks. Is it realistic that it still could be backing up? Under backup status it shows my new location and has a rotating circle spinning, and next to it it says “Preparing.” Also, I do hear my NAS making some noise. Synology DS918+ with 48TB of space.

This doesn’t seem normal. I have 50k tracks and the preparation phase of the backup takes a few minutes. OK, your CPU isn’t the fastest and the i5-10210U in my 10th gen NUC is nearly 3 times as fast, but this doesn’t explain 18 hours and counting.

Is your database on an SSD or spinning disks? If it has to do a lot of criss-cross reading to prepare the backup, I imagine it’s possible that it’s much slower with spinning disks, but I don’t have direct NAS experience, so I don’t know.

Interesting that you say that ….. my drives are Seagate Iron Wolf 12 TB 3.5” Internal HDD’s. The ironic thing is that on my Mac Book where I set this all up it shows that wheel spinning. If I look on phone it says the last backup to this newly created file was yesterday at 3:24 PM.

Top pic MacBook currently. Bottom pic iphone currently.

Thank you @Suedkiez for any insights or commentary.

Hmmm, I don’t know. It’s weird that it shows two different states on the two remotes. There is a strong recommendation to have the Roon database on an SSD, not spinning drives, but I don’t know what kind of effect this has on backup preparation times.

Something for official support, I guess, or maybe a community NAS expert comes along

I just called Synology and took them through this. He said that the discrepancy is due to the different devices. Basically, the iPhone is telling me that I did back it up yesterday at 3:30. The MacBook, being more detailed, is telling me that it is still backing up. He said it is normal for a backup like this to take a day or so. So far I have about 1.74 GB backed up and 7000 files/folders. There really is no meter to tell me when it is 100% backed up, and he said to check back in several hours to see how much is backed up and if it is stuck there, give them a call back. Thanks for your help again. @Suedkiez

I doubt that. Everything happens on the server and the phone and Mac apps are just remotes. They should be getting the same state to display sent from server, I would think.

I wonder how he knows that. Sure, a full NAS backup with 48 TB can easily take that long, but a 40k tracks Roon database?

Well, it won’t hurt to wait, but @DDPS can you take a look and confirm?

I wanna make sure we’re all talking the same thing here… We’re talking about backing up just the Room database, correct? A person at Synology would have no experience with that. That said, there’s no way a database backup for a library of that size should take that long. When you get the properties of the database folder on your NAS in File Station, what size is it reporting that it is?

About 1.74 GB and about 3300 files and 3500 folders. Synology tech was familiar with Roon.

There is no reason that that should take anything more than a half hour - worst case - unless the external drive or cable has issues.

Now I guess I need to figure out how to stop it and use it for a backup on my new device.

Help is welcomed!!
