How to delete skipped files

I googled here and elsewhere and cannot find the answer, I have a heap of useless skipped files accumulated over the last 7 years which I’m suspecting might be affecting how Roon operates so it would be good to clear them out - but how???

What are uselerss skipped files?

Because the tracks have been skipped and not added to your library, then I don’t believe that you can use Roon to delete them, you will have to use Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder to delete them from your storage, or, if they are on a NAS, use the NAS to delete them.

Roon at least gives you the locations of the files, but deleting them is a manual process.

Thanks - that makes sense. Now where in Windows Explorer do I find the folder to delete them?

They are your files. You put them there. Check in Roon settings to see where your drive is located. Roon also has a file manager built in now.

The chances of deleting a few tracks you don’t like making any difference to the overall performance of Roon is infinitesimal.

OK, about all I see are three files at the end of the music ones - “roon contents” “.roon journal” & a jpg Cover file. So I gather the two Roon ones can be deleted to eliminate unwanted junk?

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about

Maybe this might enlighten you

These are the folders I was referring to,

I’m still at a loss about this situastion.
Here is a screeen shot of skipped files

Now here is the Roon display of the album of that first skipped file

And here is the file in Windows exolorer

The “skipped file” is not the junk showing at the bottom of the Explorer display as I deleted it and the skipped file is still there in Roon, even after Roon was re-booted.

Bottom line is I’m perplexed about all these skipped files. If they are useless , why are they still there after having been examined? If no use they should automatically diappear after a period or we should have a simple way of removing them.

Did you go to :gear: > Library > Library maintenance > Clean up Library and deleted any references to files there?

Yes, I do this to clean up ther library periodically BUT it does nix for those skipped files.

And you clicked the Refresh button in the Skipped Files screen?

As shown in the screenshot, the reason for skipping these files is “Audio stream format not supported

Audio Stream Format Not Supported - The file is may be valid, but Roon doesn’t support this format. It might use an unsupported codec (for example, an MPEG4 file with a .m4a extension where we couldn’t locate an AAC or ALAC track), use an unsupported sample rate or bit depth, be a video file, or otherwise be a type of media that Roon is not prepared to handle right now.

I assume these are .iso files with .cue
Or maybe .ape.
What is the actual extension and characteristics of these files?

Yes, makes no difference

All sorts of files and yes, I understand why they are there, but how do I delete them?

Let’s sum it up :grinning:

  • You already know what these files are and where they are (you can see the path to each of these skipped files in Roon and even export this list to Excel).
  • You found them one by one in Windows Explorer (by the path).
  • Then you deleted them manually in Windows Explorer (or better move them to another foder far from Roon).

Now you need to rescan the folder that contained these deleted (moved) files:
Settings > Storage > Folders > “My Music” … Force rescan
After that, you can clean up the library:
Settings > Library > Library maintenance > Clean up library

IMO all this should help :grinning:

The siituation in this library is very strange. They are all flac file and appear to have only a few dates involved. There are hundreds of them but most have only a few dates attached. e.g.There are 25 listed as created 30 Dec 2023, modified from Jan 2017 (and that date is before I joined the Roon program) up to Sept 2022, most there because the audio stream was not supported, a few because the files were corrupt.

To go back and scan the hundreds of albums iinvolved would take ages. There must be an easier way of eliminating them.

It has been suggersted the files are in Windows explorer, but I cannot find them there. They were created by Roon so I suspect are in the registry somewhere attached to Roon.

There must be a simple answer somwhere???

As I said earlier, the list of skipped files shows the filepath to the offending files, so this should help you locate them.

Well, there is a radical way :grinning:
I would backup the entire Roon database, then try to create a new database and import all my media files again.
Unfortunately, this will take some time.
Then you could see what happened with those skipped files.
Maybe this will clear the list.
Anyway there will be an option to restore your current database in case your playback history, custom playlists, tags, and other manually made changes are important to you

Thanks Serge, but with a library of close to 640,000 files I’ll pass on that.

Geoff, I’ve just spent some time trying to track things down as you suggest. I finally located one faulty file in Windows Explorer and deleted it → yes it vanished from the Skipped files list.

Then I tracked down a faulty file in CD3 of a Schiff Mozart Piano Concerto. The skipped file data clearly says “Audio stream not supported” yet the offending track is playing without problems as I type.

Here is the info at the Skipped page -

and here is info from Explorer

So why does the track still appear in the skipped list when it appears to me to be OK?
