Roon is a program that has different versions:
- There is a Roon version that runs on Windows OS.
- There is a Roon version that runs on MacOS.
- There is a Roon version that runs on Linux OS.
- And there is ROCK, a combination of prebuilt Roon OS version with prebuilt Roon program that runs on specific NUCs (like previously mentioned on NUC gen 6 through gen 10). There is also Roon software for Nucleus which is technically the same with ROCK
ROCK is the simplest thing to run and manage. Basically it is an appliance. You install once and can almost forget about maintenance etc. So the benefit is great and this is what I use.
The downside is that the current version of ROCK (hence Roon OS) can only boot with device that support legacy boot. Intel NUC11 and newer no longer support legacy boot, they can only boot with UEFI, which current version of Room OS does not yet support.
I really hope they come up with a new Roon OS that support UEFI.
For now, you could either install Room on Windows OS or Linux on your NUC11.
Hope this helps.
