Description of Issue

I just switched desktop computers (from an iMac to a Mac Studio) and can no longer specify a backup folder. Do I need to add a network share? And if so, how do you specify this? I’d like to have the Roon Backups go directly onto my Macintosh HD on the Mac Studio in the Music folder. I don’t know how to write this and am hoping someone can help. Instructions in the Roon manual do not seem to cover specifying a backup path.

The procedure is similar to that of adding a Watched Folder as a network share on a Mac, except in this case you are adding a Backup folder.

You mentioned putting the Backup folder in the Mac’s Music folder? If the Music folder has been added as a Watched Folder to the Nucleus then you should not do this. Put the Backup folder elsewhere, and make it a shared folder.

Thanks for your quick response. My Mac’s Music Folder is not a Watched Folder so I won’t have any problems there. However, I’ve followed the instructions you linked for me and tried multiple times to add network share with no results. Here’s what I get: “Could not connect to share: Unauthorized”

Any ideas what I can do?

Thanks in advance.

I’m curious if you need to supply a fuller path description than simply naming the folder. What I’ve entered under Network share location is: smb://192.168.1.x/Roon Backups. The Roon Backups folder is contained within Mac Music folder. Do I need a more complete path description?

Did you enter the username and password credentials for the shared folder on your Mac into the relevant fields of Roon’s “Add network share” screen?

Can you post a screenshot of that screen?

PS I still don’t think it’s a good idea to put the location of your backup folder inside of your Music folder, even if the latter is not a Watched folder for Roon. Best practice would be to locate it elsewhere. The contents of the backup folder are backups of your Roon database - not music files and album folders.

Ok, I’ve created a Roon_Backups folder in Documents on my Macintosh HD. I’m attaching a number of screenshots. The first is of the “add network share” screen. I’m also attaching screenshots of the shared file settings under System Settings to make sure everything is good there. Finally, I’m attaching a screenshot of “add network share” when I tried to use a fuller path description. Again, I very much appreciate your help.

I may be wrong (probably am), but I wonder whether spaces are permissable in the username (e.g. Mark Salkind)?

I suggest you create a user “roon” and use that for your shared backup folder…

My apologies, but I’m not sure what you mean by create a user “roon” and use that for your shared backup folder – ? I’ve created a user “Roon,” as a shared user. But what do you mean by using that for the shared backup folder?

By the way, MarkSalkind and marksalkind, as well as Mark_Salkind and mark_salkind don’t work either.

Geoff – I wanted you to know that I was finally successful in specifying a backup folder and that I’ve completed my first backup on the new Mac Studio. The key is something I missed in the Roon FAQ on how to create a shared folder instructions: you have to check your own account under “Windows File Sharing”. I’ve attached a screenshot to show this. I also don’t think I need a Roon user account, but I’ll doublecheck this – I think checking “Mark Salkind” and entering the password under Windows File Sharing is sufficient.
In any case, I’m very grateful to you for your help in guiding me through this. Thank you!

– Mark
