Recently had to warrantee replace my DS1515+ due to a power supply issue. Replacement unit arrived and ‘migration’ to that unit went smoothly using the Synology defined procedure. My NAS-based Roon installation is up and running well. This installation includes a SSD to function as the Roon cache/fast retrieval device. I can see the SSD is mounted. Is there something I can look at to verify that Roon is actually using the SSD? I’m concerned that even though the SSD is mounted Roon might not see it and use it due to the recovery.
@Raymond_Elseth Did you add the SSD as a Synology cache? If that’s the case, does that really help Roon? A cache certainly helps when you have repeat accesses to an item, but the first time you hit an item it misses the cache and needs to fetch from the spinning disk. So I’m not sure that Roon benefits from an SSD cache. Now, if when a spot on the disk is first hit the system loads it and nearby data onto the cache on the theory that if you touch an item you’re likely to need to access nearby data that’s another story. The bottom line is that I’m not at all confident that Roon benefits from an SSD cache. It seems to me that you’d be better off not using the SSD cache feature and dedicating an SSD disk or two for the limited purpose of the Roon database. For a modest investment, I’d seriously consider a NUC running Roon Rock with an SSD and leaving your music on the Synology. That’s the configuration I’ve adopted. I love it. By the way, I have a pair of Synology 1515+ devices that I use for different things. My music files happen to reside on a Synology DS 716+. Alternatively, if the NAS-based Roon is running well, why worry about whether the cache is being utilized on the theory of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”
There are some specific instructions for enabling Roon on a NAS and using the SSD has nothing to do with the Synology use which is as a cache. Roon use is dedicated to the SSD and it cant be used for other things (AFAIK) @crieke would be the best to explain this. there is a KB article too…let me find it
