HQPlayer Desktop thread

Oliver I recommend that save your configuration file from within HQPLAYER so that if you do mess things up then you can just restore it back to a known good working configuration.

You also download the HQplayer app and test many filters while not affecting your original configuration

Oh, my God how I enjoy being able to build and set up a new computer in just one day, running both Roon and HQPlayer.
I must say, that the SQ is better. But I can’t say if it depends on the new computer, Windows 11 O/S (would be surprising) or if the HQPlayer Desktop 5 options are so much better.
Fresh W11, Roon and HQPlayer 5 Desktop (trial still) on poly-sinc-xtr-short-mp, ASDM7EC Super upsample to DSD256 to a RME DAC2.
Prior to this upgrade of PC and software I converted my ethernet LAN to a glass fiber-LAN, isolated from the household LAN, truly galvanically isolated. Need additional linear PSU’s but it will come eventually. Far less stray noise.
And, it works right away, GUI, select and click. Much more music. Thank God for this change …

This is what I would assume.

It’s nice to play with speeds below 8000Mt/s. You can tighten the timings a lot without even touching the volts… And even these are already much faster than the 8000 XMP profile. And this is only the second day because the stability tests take half the day… Now 36-45-45-36 and trfcs 608/494. The goal now is some CAS34xx. VDDs 1.45 SA 1.25 TX 1.32 IMC 1.385 and tweak mode 2.

edit. These speeds seem to work better with tight timings with HQP. Probably so much easier RAM+MOBO+CPU.

34-45-45-45-34 608/494 VDDs 1.55 SA 1.27 TX 1.34 IMC 1.45. Now they are already much faster than 8200 with standard timings.

Quite good latencies, although there is still room for improvement…

I would like to set the number of DSP pipelines to 2 but only have 8 as the lowest option?
I could set it in the config file but do not know where to find this on my MacMiniM1…

There are also choices of 2 and 4 pipelines in recent releases.

@jussi_laako, this last post raises a question for me. I use Desktop 5 version. For stereo, I run a 2.1 format — three channels. Of course, I set HQP for 4 channels which uses 5 pipes in the pipeline. Can HQP be set to three channels in Desktop, regardless of the pipes required, and regardless, would that make any difference in either sound quality or load on the CPU/GPU? Thanks. JCR

No, there is no reason for such fine tuning. Only difference would be tiny difference in RAM usage, no difference in CPU/GPU load.

Your actual audio output is anyway 4 channels, so just setting it to 4 pipelines is best.

Hi everyone

I have an original, gen 1, M1 Mac Mini with 8 gig RAM. It runs Roon core and HQP, and supports my current filters/modulator of choice, which is:

N1 - poly-sinc-gauss-halfband
Nx - poly-sinc-gauss-hires-lp
ASDM7EC-light 512+fs

I upsample to 44.1kx512 and output SDM to a Sonore ultraRendu and then onto a Lampizator Baltic4 DAC.

This all plays together very nicely and I like the sound very much. But I have no processing headroom to try out the heavier modulators or filters. Does anyone have any experience with the newer Apple silicon and whether it can run a wider rage of choices in this regard please?

I think there is a new version of the Mac Mini due this month so maybe I should ask this question again at the end of the year?

Thank you.

I have almost the same setup, except T+A DAC 200. I can do similar filters/mod choice (except I do poly-sinc-gauss-long for 1x and halfband-s for Nx), however I have stepped down to DSD256 ASDM7EC-light for DAC Correction. Suits me just fine. Especially since I have modded the MMM1 with a linear power supply (and I don’t know if the Teradak kit works on the newer Macs).

Folks. If you are using Intel 13th/14th gen cpu, make sure you flash bios with the newest firmware for your motherboard that have the latest microcode 0x12B

My Intel 13600k with a 3080TI now can run dsd1024 with 7EC super 512fs no stuttering!!!
prior to the bios flash never managed to run dsd1024 with any EC modulators!!!

Can’t run dac correction tho, but audiolense convolution runs fine as well

I flashed my ASRock z790 Nova motherboard last week but I didn’t notice performance difference unfortunately. Thats a pretty big change for what was just an update to protect the CPU’s (as important as it is). Maybe you were on a much older bios version on your particular system and some other aspect helped out … ?

I was definitely on an older bios prior to the update and only figured I would check to update the bios having read about the issue with Intel 13/14 gen cpus and the microcode 0x12b…

What I did notice was that before the Bios flash, my PC running DSD512x48 and say some heavier filter like MGa or HB-L, one of my core can get up to 95c but jumps back then right away…

With the newest bios, the same settings DSD512x48 7EC Super with MGa or HB-L, no core ever goes pass 85c. Which was the reason why I decided to give 1024 a try, starting out with 5ECUL, that was stable then I tried also 5EC super, 7EC super…

Just posted this on another thread. Hope it helps.

Roon Nucleus (via Ethernet) → Mac Mini (w/HQP) via ethernet→ UP gateway running NAA OS on a USB stick (via Ethernet) → Intona (via USB) → T+A DAC 200 → Amp → Speakers

My Mac Mini config is M2Pro /10-Core CPU / 16-Core GPU / 16GB RAM.

Currently with the DAC correction, I’m achieving DSD 256 with ASDM7ECv3. Without Correction, I was achieving DSD 512 with ASDM7EC-light 512+fs - could not play ASDM7ECv3.

@jussi_laako, would you kindly provide an example of the Desktop 5.8.0 addition of running analysis on library music content for true peak and RMS levels, loudness, and need for an apodizing filter. Thanks. JCR

There’s an example in the PDF manual.

But here are two screenshots:

I adjusted the CPU a bit and tweaked the memory some more. LLC6 -0.035 Best case scenario. Latest ME but 9905 bios and 11F microcode. It seems to work better with the new ME, even though the latest bios was immediately trashed…
