HQPlayer Embedded Discussion [2023]

I’m estimating more dongles coming in early March…

Thanks, my new server should be here in a couple of weeks. I’ll use the email approach that @andybob described.

I read a report on your measurement on the Holo Audio Spring 3 DAC regarding jitter from different inputs, namely USB and IIS, on another forum.
USB was better than IIS.
Is this the same with the May DAC?
I finally ordered one a few days ago, so I’ll get one in February.

Should be yes, since the relevant parts are the same.

I see. So, IIS doesn’t have merit as long as the USB input is designed well enough.

But for the May has (I don’t know, if the Spring has here the same implementation) a really great PLL for limiting Jitter on SPDIF ans I2S.
The disadvantage is, that the sync with PLL on can take a lot of seconds.
I prefer with my May also USB (my main source), but for other sources I’m using also both I2S inputs.

What kind of sources do you use for IIS?

Holo Audio Red connected through USB (HQPlayer) and I2S (Roon endpoint) to the May.
The second I2S is used for the Oppo BDP-105D → HDMI audio extractor with I2S out.

Is there a reason why you use the RED in DDC mode?
I already have a RED and use it in the streamer mode, having Jussi’s NAA embedded image installed.

My chain is (partially planned):
PC (roon core) >(LAN connection)> a dedicated HQPlayer embedded computer >(LAN connection)> Holo RED (streamer mode and HQPlayer NAA) >(USB connection)> Holo May

The RED in streamer mode and Jussi’s program were game changers, so I decided to purchase the May DAC.

I’m using the Red as streamer (NAA and RAAT) with Ropieee and two outputs.

I see.
I think I misunderstood your chain, but that’s okay.
Thank you!

Yes, Spring 3 has that too. That way the performance through I2S is fairly close to the USB performance, but doesn’t quite reach it though.

Yes, in such cases I recommend to set HQPlayer to output always fixed output rate and enable the “Idle time” setting, for example to 30 seconds. Then the DAC doesn’t need to lock as frequently. And one can start playback by first going into pause, and once the lock has been established, unpausing the playback.

Sometimes, depending on source or DAC, I2S can also have some output muting issues when starting/stopping DSD playback or switching between PCM and DSD modes. (snap crackle and pop) Because the transition is rather complex and with USB it can be better controlled.

If that’s the case, I2S seems to have no advantage over USB TODAY (I emphasize it here as it seems it was difficult to design a quality USB input years ago when PS Audio started the I2S over LVDS protocol.).

Yes, there are some cases where it is useful though. I’ve used it with some SMSL/Topping DACs that have buggy XMOS USB implementation where 16x PCM and DSD512 misbehave. So it can be used to work around such issues…

This helps.
The next time I choose a DAC, I will pay more attention to how carefully the USB input has been designed. I tend to just focus on the DA conversion circuit.
The input stage should be as important as the conversion stage.

Really enjoying “ Support for configuration profiles”

Able to create and load various settings and favorites congratulations on the fly!

BTW! @mavmcl

Hi!
Any plans to add the DAC profiles to HQPDcontrol App?

I asked Jussi about this a couple of weeks ago.
It’s a third party developed app, so we need to see what the developer does.

Jussi’s client on the iPad is already updated, but I am 95% Android on my phone so I am waiting for it as well.

DAC profiles store all settings including if DAC correction is enabled or disabled!
This feature is a time saver for profiles where DAC correction may need to be disabled.

Many thanks @jussi_laako

It is definitely the best and easiest user facing (simple) change since I started using HQPlayer.
It makes it more accessible to non HQP users that can pick up a remote and change rooms and all associated settings.
Really nice work :+1:
