Excuse me for butting in, Frank, but have you tried swapping the power supplies Host to Target?
Strikes me that moving the good one over should amplify any difference - since you’d be doubling the impact? Fairly easy swap too
This discussion has me thinking I’ll try swapping my ‘better’ SOtM 200UN and 200N around, currently the former is the Target, and maybe it should be the Host instead
I’d assumed ‘closer to the DAC’ meant better unit
@Andrew_Stoneman
Hi Andy, thank you for your reaction. This is indeed a very good idea. But I cannot swap both powersupplies, as they have a totally different connector at the 5 Volt side. The host is a standard RPI5, so has a USB-C connector. The target is in a special enclosure with a totally different powerconnector than the standard USB-C. Thanks again for the tip, but it cannot work in my specific setup.
Kind regards, Frank.
Honestly, I don’t think I hear any significant differences between the $16.95 Raspberry Pi official 5v/5A 45W power supplies and the $299 iFi Elite 5V/5A. But, I had the iFi SilentPower adapters leftover from another project, and the look nicer in my main system.
Hi David,
Thank you for your point of view. Nice picture by the way.
So I will not spend €300 to change the powersupply of the host.
Implementing Diretta in my system made a big difference, so thank you for your thread. It pulled me over to start with Diretta and I am still a big fan.
Kind regards, Frank.
A careful study of my photograph will reveal that I’ve adorned my beloved system with other trinkets (I call them “audiophile jewelry”). Not every decision I make is in service of sound quality alone as there are other aspects to enjoyment in this hobby that reward attention.
Put that €300 towards more music or a nice meal with someone you love and you’ll be happier.
@David_Snyder Have you tried the Slim2Diretta option in host menu and tick off “Enable Squeebox Support” on Roon server? Have to stop Roon bridge service then, and I guess maybe change CPU/IRQ settings on host? Some thinks this results in better sound than the Roon bridge on host…
I have not. It seems like a step backwards to me. I wonder if those who find that it sounds better than RAAT have actually taken the time to optimize the native Diretta Host software and OS for CPU core isolation and assigned core affinity for IRQ handling.
For folks heavily invested in the Squeezebox ecosystem who use Lyrion Music Server (instead of Roon), I think Slim2Diretta makes a lot of sense and is a clear improvement over the previous Squeezelite solution. For Roon users, staying with RAAT is the better choice.
Is RAAT perfect? No. But this three-tier Roon + Diretta architecture effectively makes RAAT “perfect” by eliminating the deleterious effects of its bursty network transmissions. Thus, we have the best of both worlds.
Just one man’s opinion, though. If folks are enjoying Slim2Diretta with Roon in their systems, I’m happy for them.
I have tried it, and liked the wider and deeper soundstage, but was reluctant to leave the community’s main roonbridge/diretta_alsa development path. Using info from Matthew Arndt, I made minor configuration adjustments in Host (with roonbridge enabled) which have at least equaled Slim2Diretta sound.
Yes, I had slim2diretta running on a RPi4 Host instead of roonbridge (with Roon’s LMS turned on) for about a week, and liked the soundstage. But I’ve since returned to diretta_alsa where I can play with configuration settings to optimize the performance of my particular gear, room and preferences.
