I want to use a MacBook as an endpoint which in turn outputs to a DAC/HiFi set up

Roon Core Machine

Core is a MacBook Pro running latest version of Monterey: MAC OS 12.1
Endpoint is another older MacBook Pro running El Capitan: MAC OS 10.11.6

Description of Issue

I want to use a MacBook as an endpoint which in turn outputs to a DAC/HiFi set up.
I can only get as far as getting sound out of my laptop speakers.
Can I do this? If so how do I set it up?

That’s easily accomplished. You have two options to connect a DAC to your Mac endpoint—USB or Toslink. Older Macs support Toslink output from the headphones connector, using a mini-Toslink adaptor. With one of my DACs this is exactly what I do… I have the DAC connected via Toslink, and in the Mac’s Roon application I have enabled Core Audio output as a zone:

If you are not running roon remote on the laptop you can just install roon bridge and setup the endpoint in any roon remote
