Idle speculation on the “something big” 💥

Really wished the basics would get some attention first. This new feature only makes things more complicated and takes more time from the developers. After multiple years/months some issues have still not been solved.

I don’t know when the new feature will be announced, but I know exactly when Roon will be bug-free: never. (It’s not just Roon btw, it’s any software complex enough.)

Haha, you’re absolutely right! No way to satisfy everybody

Just a thought , are there support tickets in play for the “basics” you refer to ?

If not clairvoyance costs extra

Certainly! Only pending for a long time now. Stopped reminding the support team it’s still not solved. Don’t want to nag too much since there is more in life than Roon

which support ticket is it ?

Android app freezing during usage (ref#JY4FRC) (which I closed myself because the requested information demanded a degree in nuclear physics)
Tidal Landing Page New Albums not updating in Roon [Ticket In] (ref#3A3SAP)
Non-existent songs playing in playlist (ref#E7YGY4)

And one still active:

I sympathise . Its frustrating when you get an issue like the loop one. That said a support team takes ages to replicate some issues like that especially when it seems to be related to one hardware supplier and hence a limited number of users.

In an ideal world the dev team would be split to new stuff and existing stuff fixes. I ran a support team for many years and always had that balance in mind , everybody pushes for their new feature , the other group want their problem solved.

Roon is a mature product and given the range of equipment it has to interface with I think does a good job.

The inevitable problem is that a new feature may mean nothing in your life. ARC is a good example , it was a highly pressurise “Must Have” and was prioritised . Even when launched it still needed a lot of dev effort to get it right . I have never used it and am unlikely to BUT …

Stuff that I would like eg the Box Set solution still haven’t appeared. What was the quote “You can please …”

Chatgpt said it can also be a " live-like” DSP/processing or presentation feature" which is more appealing for me than nugs.net

Search by label in Qobuz/Tidal finally!

Ok, just kidding, probably something nobody asked for but was very ‘exciting to develop!’

Probably stolen from the top of this thread

I’m still hoping for “Roon Ready Relay” to work with a Wiim.

Going by this image in Roon’s November newsletter and the the almost 1-to-1 overlap in bands nugs host, I’d say the only question is when, not if.

Not something I am personally excited by or interested in, but going off the other memorable concerts thread it’s certainly going to please a key segment of Roon’s user base and I’m guessing nugs.net are going to be doing extremely well in terms of new signup via Roon.

In fact I’d hazard a guess that those potential referral signups would have made for a nice partnership agreement, either covering some of the upfront development costs or an ongoing kickback on referrals. So it’s not really that unsurprising that this has been pushed to the top of the development pile if it can effectively pay for itself.

Alas I feel you are correct.

Never a great lover of live albums and thankfully still get to gigs so this one won’t be that big for me.

Hope its not nugs. Not much interested in live albums although I am a fan of YouTube playlists with video. That integration I would be interested in especially with optimised DSP for lossy YouTube streams.

If it is nugs, I wounder what is in it for roon? Nugs is tiny, very niche, alot of noise on line about poor scaling of live streams even for such a small user base.

Video support sounds like a very major step for roon even if nugs infrastructure was more solid. Without video support I guess it boils down to a live radio stream? Maybe a few extensions. I wounder what the typical usage is for a roon live radio channel?

See above, I expect nugs are the ones with most to gain from new signups — in fact I expect they’ll will do extremely well there — so they may have approached Roon with a potential partnership agreement that helped make the business case for integration.

In terms of Roon, it’s a new feature they can shout about, it aligns with a core segment of their user base — Roon know in detail the listening habits of their users, but we can hazard a guess from memorable concerts and the average Roon user age from various threads that there is some major overlap here.

So this integration will certainly drive new signups to both platforms, likely more so than many of the other feature requests which are more incremental in nature, after all many of Roon’s ‘quirks’ aren’t apparent until your already invested, fixing them won’t directly bring new subscribers — it may stem users leaving, but again I expect Roon have crunched the numbers there.

I have no insider knowledge here, but I expect it will only be audio (video seem to much of a leap) and probably just archived shows to start.

That all seems very achievable within the current Roon architecture — it’s basically a new integration on the streaming service page and a new block on the artist page under albums for ‘Live shows from Nugs’.

I expect live shows will come later if the partnership / integration proves successful, maybe an alert in Roon when any of your hearted artists has an upcoming live show on Nugs and a link (with a countdown) on the artist page to allow you to stream the audio in real time.

On that last point, one thing we might get as a side affect of this work is better alerts in general ie. the ability to be alerted when a favourited artist has a new release or an upcoming concert in my home city — the latter also has a nice revenue stream built in for Roon if they can agree partnership agreement (referral payments) with the various ticket agencies.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see

In app (client) purchases for which Roon gets a cut :man_shrugging:

The cost of subscription to Nugs.net are not the best either IMO. $15/month for mp3/AAC, $20/month for lossless and up to 15% discount in purchases, $25 for lossless and up to 20% discount in purchases.

I think the higher priced subs have videos. So maybe Roon Vision is coming :man_shrugging::man_facepalming::rofl:

Marketing dear boys, marketing.

Nugs, not drugs!

(FWIW I don’t care about this upcoming addition to Roon. Just give me Atmos playback via Tidal and I will be happy)
