iFi Zen Stream

Hi, there isn’t a link. You open up a ticket on their website and they’ll send you an email with a file and instructions. Then you need a windows machine and a USB-C cable (to be connected to the service port in the rear of the ZS). It doesn’t take long. Once you do this, you’ll have access to the ZS via Nexis, the new App. Hope this helps

@Vitor_Goncalves Thank you for sharing this information.

Even with 2.32.17, I was still having a very brief drop-out every ~30mins so I stopped using the Stream and bought a Wiim instead.

Following your advice, I opened a ticket with Ifi support and now have my Stream running with the latest 3.0.0.x firmware. I am delighted to report that I’ve now been playing the Stream for 2+ hours and not had a single drop-out.

So now I need to listen to both devices back to back and decide which one to keep and which one to sell…

This is great news. I did something similar, but have moved the WIIM Pro Plus to a different room.

In truth my expectations were not great for this upgrade release, but you and @Vitor_Goncalves have helped improve them significantly

The new firmware (v3.00.6) is considered stable according to iFi: https://www.reddit.com/r/iFiaudio/s/SDTwZqk0MU

I have been running this firmware for a couple of months and haven’t encountered any problems. It’s stable and works perfectly. Since the Stream 3 is now released I would even go as far as to recommend getting the og stream at a discounted price or 2nd hand. I cannot imagine the new version sounding better and the software is now the same. you still have to go thru support to get this firmware, but that’s a small hassle.

OK I finally gave up and requested access to the new beta and hopefully it lives up to what I have read so far

Quick bit of feedback time, and yes it was a bit of a pain to get everything setup after so long, but it’s running now and seems to be running perfectly so far. After some issues with WiFi not working when Ethernet was unplugged, but I got that working eventually.

I don’t use Qobuz anymore but nice to have another device that has it if I ever go back.

Music definitely seems smoother and I have not heard a dropped second so far.

I am only testing it with Roon, but it will be nice to go beyond that in the next couple of weeks.

Hopefully they will get this out to the public soon, as it seems to be a solid improvement on the original firmware and really could have done with being release back in 2023 or 2024 a few years after the Stream was released.

I understand this is no longer a beta version and it’ll be the only way to update the original ZS with the new firmware. Once you do it, then you can get new updates using the NEXIS App. However, they’re not advertising this possibility in their website, presumably to promote the ZS 3 as the new streamer to buy. I appreciate the fact that they are giving owners of the original ZS the chance to keep it up to date, but they don’t seem to be using this as positive marketing. Cambridge went down a different route by providing and advertising Qobuz Connect in older models

There was not a list of post release positive marketing after the initial good feedback and reviews.

So yes this is good news and seems to work really well so far. Hopefully they will get the news out there as it definitely gives the original ZS a new lease of life.

I’ve been running my stream all week without a single dropout and it’s worked perfectly and the new Nexis app looks excellent.

However, I couldn’t detect any meaningful difference between the stream or Wiim Pro into my RME DAC. As I only need the streamer to be a Roon endpoint, the Wiim stays and the stream is now on an auction site (but I can’t say which one…….)

I have not yet been able to get my Stream into the Nexus app as it does not find it.

I have a Wiim Pro Plus in another room going into a DAC via Coxial and always felt that the stream generally sounded slightly better (and much better when using the built-in DAC of the pro plus), especially when using the Stream in in Roon only mode. But that could easily be my brain expecting that.to happen and agreeing with itself

You might be running into the saying problem that I first encountered with the app, namely that you have pressed the blue + symbol on the Nexis app homepage. Apparently this feature is for upgrading the firmware in much newer devices.

Here are the instructions I got from iFi support on how to add the stream to the Nexis app

  1. Navigate to the “Streaming” section at the bottom of the screen (circle with a musical note)

  2. Open the menu on the left of the screen and select “Settings”

  3. In the Settings menu, select “Device Setup”, and then select “Add Existing Device”

  4. You should see the device listed if it is already connected to the network

  5. Once the device is connected, you can access the full functionality of the GUI via the Nexis app

Thank you John you were absolutely correct. It des feel a bit of a weird way to do things

I appreciate you pointing me and others to the right place to make this work

It is weird. I encountered the same problem. They want us to think harder :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

by the way, if you install Volumio (the App) the ZS also shows up and you’ll have access to the same functions

After putting my stream up for auction, I then spent an hour deliberating how I might be able to stream to my Chord Mojo when I find myself wanting to listen to my phones on the sofa instead of in the study. Should I dig out my old Raspberry Pi with SPDIF HAT?, should I get a coax cable with 3.5mm connector? The 10 year old HP laptop running Mint Linux is getting very long in the tooth. What to do… Oh wait, I can actually use the stream to connect to the Mojo via USB (which I never used on the stream). Works perfectly and sounds great.

Stream removed from sale followed by taking a good hard look at myself in the mirror…..

There is the option to update with a Mac using a dmg file, it went smooth enough. ifi also has a YouTube video to walk you through the process. Piece of cake, working fine. Thank y’all for the heads up as I wouldn’t have known about the update until I saw the post about it.

It’s interesting that there’s a Mac version now, I thought all the previous upgrades and firmware reset tools were Windows only. I never even looked that far in them document. Good that they have moved onto support more platforms

Thanks for the update here. I’m at CanJam in NYC, I’ll do the update when I’m home. I had mine working ok on an old firmware and just stopped it updating when others had issues. Great that I can do it with my Mac mini as well.
