Importing Meridian Database to Roon and Hardware Considerations (ref#GMAO4Q)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Hello, i have a Roon lifetime account witch i like verry much to play all my music trough. For now to start, i have installed Roon server 2.62 on my Qnap TS-453A NAS. Before i used the Meridian MC200 to play my music. Years ago, when i bought the MC200, i ripped all my CD's to the MC200. I was informed that time that, when ripped, the quality should be better then the original cd, because when by ripping it ensures that every bit will be copied en playing a cd, sometimes a bit is missing. Therefore, after that, i gave away my full cd collection. Now i have tried to import this full Meridian database in to Roon. The albums are there, but there is a lot of (meta) data missing, album names an much of the track numbers. It was at my start at Roon when i import the database. I don't know exactly how i did this back then.

For now i am looking forward on the best way to use Roon and i am thinking about a dedicated Roon server with Debian or Ubunto installed running on ssd with enough internal memory. Perhaps you have some exra advise for me? When i have set up this system i want to do a new import of my original MC200 database in the most complete possible way, with the track numbers etc. Can you advise me the best way to do this?

In my main room i play on a Meridian 861V6 through Mark Levinson/ revel setup. Now i can get my hands on a ID41 card for my 861V6 with is told to me that it should sound verry good in my 861V6. I was seriously considdering to buy this card, until i found out that it is not RAAT. In the future i like to add multi room and want to play this synchronised without timing issues. You as former Meridian specialists, can surely advise me a little in this point...is the ID41 really that good, or is it better toot look forward for example a Lumin U2, wich is RAAT?

Hope you can get me some good answers..

Thanks in advance

Hi @c.toller,

Thank you for your post. We’d be happy to help advise on the best path forward and provide a menu of options forward.

You mentioned a few separate issues above so we’ll address them one at a time:

Let’s first address importing your Meridian collection into Roon. When you imported from your Meridian MC200 into Roon, only the audio files came across cleanly. The MC200 stored metadata in its own system, and that doesn’t transfer. That’s why you’re seeing missing album names and track numbers. The audio quality itself is fine.

We generally recommend exporting the library from Meridian and then adding it to Roon directly as a Watched Folder (a local library import). Here’s a guide.

Once you’ve exported and then added the Watched Folder”

  • Let Roon automatically identify albums
  • For anything missing, use “Identify Album” in Roon manually
Please let us know if this helps.

Concerning a dedicated Roon Server, we recommend prioritizing the RAM, network simplicity, and processing power of the machine over the operating system. We’ll always recommend a RoonOS (Nucleus/ROCK) based system as it’s custom-built for this purpose, but a Linux-based RoonServer will function beautifully on a well-resourced machine. We generally advise against dockers/containers that might inhibit Roon’s multicast handling, but users often find containerized servers function without issue.

As for a network streamer/card, this would depend on your interests. Do you prefer to remain within the Meridian ecosystem, or are you open to any Roon Ready device in the network streamer role? There are other considerations, like the firmware support timeline. The ID41, while still supported and a flagship, fundamentally relies on an older networking architecture than other newer options from Meridian.

Let us know how we can assist further. Thank you.
