Inability to Play Qobuz Japan Music in Roon (ref#CJQU15)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Music won’t play or issues with my library

Environment: Roon + Qobuz (Japanese version)
Issue:
Some music that is available on the Japanese version of Qobuz and playable through the Qobuz app cannot be found via Roon's search. When I add these titles to my library on the Qobuz side, they do appear in my Roon library but are marked as "Unavailable" and cannot be played.
Example: Neurosis – An Undying Love for a Burning World
The vast majority of Qobuz albums are playable from Roon without issues, so this does not appear to be an authentication or account-related problem.

· Nothing special in my setup. The issue occurs both on my local LAN and when using Roon ARC, so it does not appear to be network-related.

Switches/Extenders: None

The problem seems to be specific to certain Qobuz catalog items rather than a network or connectivity issue.

Hi @bd85ngiu5te

Thank you for the report. Have you encountered this with a large number of albums (like, dozens?) or just a few?

This sounds like a potential mismatch with the distribution georestrictions between Qobuz’s native catalog and their API. Roon relies on the latter. In these cases, albums can exist in your Qobuz library but show as unavailable in Roon because the rights or metadata aren’t being passed through for playback.

We’ve seen similar cases and have flagged them for investigation. You can try using a consumer VPN to change the network pathway in use between Qobuz/Roon.

Diagnostics show some intermittent timeouts between your Roon Server and the Qobuz API around the same time that this album page data was requested. Please try logging out/back into Qobuz within Roon Settings → Services in the meantime, and then attempting to load this album page again. We’ll investigate in logs.

Thank you and we’ll watch for your response.

I tried logging out and back into Qobuz within Roon Settings → Services, but the issue persists. The album still shows as “Unavailable.”
So far, I’ve only found two affected albums:
∙ Neurosis – An Undying Love for a Burning World
∙ Battle Beast – Steelbound
Both are playable without issues in the Qobuz app.

Hi @bd85ngiu5te,

Thanks for the reply. As @connor mentioned above, it’s very likely a mismatch with the distribution georestrictions between Qobuz’s native catalog and their API which is what Roon relys on to fetch available Qobuz content.

Have you tested out using a consumer VPN at all? Let us know if you’re able to give that a try and what the results are.

Thank you! :folded_hands:

I followed the suggestion to use a VPN and have an update to share.

Environment:

  • Roon Core on a server in Japan (ISP: OPTAGE, Osaka)
  • Qobuz Japan subscription

What I tried:
Connected to ProtonVPN (Japan server) as suggested by support.

Results:

With VPN connected:

  • Previously unavailable Qobuz albums became searchable and playable in the Roon client :white_check_mark:
  • Non-library Qobuz albums were also searchable and playable in the Roon client :white_check_mark:
  • Roon ARC: library albums play fine :white_check_mark:
  • Roon ARC: searching for non-library Qobuz content returns “couldn’t find this album” :cross_mark:

After disconnecting the VPN:

  • The improvement in the Roon client persisted — albums that were previously unavailable remain playable :white_check_mark:
  • Roon ARC behavior was identical to the VPN-connected state (no change) :white_check_mark:/:cross_mark:

The main issue I was experiencing has been resolved, so I’ll monitor the situation for now. Thank you for the
suggestion.
