Incomplete Album Lists - ARC Stuck Loading Library at "S" (ref#UL8HY3)

What’s happening?

· I'm having trouble with Roon ARC

Describe the issue

Album lists are incomplete. This has been a long-standing issue that originally seemed random, however in recent months Android Auto appears to be trying to load my entire library, but doesn't get past S.

Describe your network setup

Unifi network (USG, switches and APs are all Unifi). Internet connection is static IPv4 (however also has IPv6).

For reference, this is approximately 536 albums. These albums show fine in ARC (and in Roon), this issue is specific to Android Auto.

This has occurred over numerous versions of the client/server and persisted reboots etc. For reference, current versions are:

  • Android 14, security patch level 1 April 2024
  • Roon ARC 1.0.52 Build 100266
  • Roon Server 2.0 build 1407

Hi @James_Fitzell,

Thank you for the report, I’m escalating this one to QA. I’m assuming it won’t make a difference for the AA head unit, but have you updated to RoonServer 1413 in the meantime?

In the photo above, are you using a Bluetooth or USB connection? Lastly, what is the model of AA head unit?

Hi @connor, I updated all components when they were released a few days ago but have been travelling for work and not tested AA since the update. I’ll test tomorrow and come back to you, along with info about the head unit software version.

I’m using USB connection, my car doesn’t support wireless AA.

Hi @connor

I’ve reviewed with the latest version and it’s demonstrating the same issue. For reference I have also tried deleting all app data, uninstalling/reinstalling ARC and reconfiguring it from scratch with the same result (although I didn’t try that today, I did it a few weeks ago before deciding to log this case)

My car is a Mercedes GLC 300 (MY20 in Oz). Not sure how to check all of the head unit details but the software version is apilevel/ntg6_fup2/063 and according to the car OTA update feature it’s the latest.

This might provide some more info about the Android Auto version.

Hi @connor

Did the above help at all? Anything else I can provide?

Hi @James_Fitzell,

Sorry for the delay here. We’ve escalated to development and drawn some conclusions here:

There are inherent limitations to the number of objects (images) that the head unit can download at any one time. This is outside of Roon’s control - designed for quick glances, not active scrolling, the browser in a head unit will download a limited number of objects/images in one lump sum. This is usually limited to 200 or 500 objects - we’ve recently raised the limit to 500 from 200 within ARC. If you have a large library - particularly if a large volume of content is within the “S” alphabetic range for Albums - then you are likely hitting the 500 limit prior to that letter. We have ongoing work to raise this limit, but there are inherent limitations in the head unit here that prevent us from fully resolving this issue.

We can probably find a reliable workaround here if we know a little more about your library. How many Albums in your library start with S, or the letters preceding S? Do you have any playlists containing that content?

Hi @connor,

I’ll get you some stats over this weekend and respond.

In the meantime, from a practical perspective I dont want/need my entire library while driving. What I would like to see available is just my favourites (a much smaller number of albums and the ones I most listen to).

In general it seems to me that the limited interface of Android Auto shouldn’t even present the entire library (if you need that you can do it on the phone). Just favourite albums, downloads, playlists and maybe roon radio seem like the sort of things you’d want to reach for while driving.

Hi @James_Fitzell,

Thank you for sharing your perspective. The product team will be sure to read and ingest your perspective here - we’re happy to continue this conversation until we can find a workaround or recommended user flow that works well for your driving routine.

Hi @connor, some extra stats as promised.

When sorted alphabetically, up to and including S is 537 albums, so that’s where I’m hitting the new 500 limit. Prior to the more recent updates there was no consistency in what was being shown at all, I’d see a seemingly random mix of albums across the whole library/stack so the lower 200 limit wasn’t terribly apparent (because I wasn’t able to use the library list in Android Auto in a meaningful way at all)

In terms of album titles “starting letter”, the top 5 cover almost half (45%) my library:

  • S - 92 albums
  • A - 61 albums
  • M - 52 albums
  • B - 48 albums
  • P - 33 albums

In terms of other stats:

  • My playlists don’t have albums in them at all, just individual tracks, but several playlists include several hundreds of tracks across a mix of local content, tidal “library” content, and tidal non-library content (i.e. content that’s only in the playlist and not in my library album/tracks list)
  • My library has 468 local and 168 Tidal.
  • I have 161 favourite albums (91 local, 70 Tidal)

I’ve tried using the new Android Assistant feature, and I have successfully asked Google to play albums above S even though they’re not showing in the UI.

Out of interest PlexAmp appears to show my whole library fine in Android Auto, but:

  • the user interface is so poor that it’s hard to know for sure, and
  • since PlexAmp only shows local OR tidal it only has a maximum of 468 albums in the current state so could even have the same 500 limit in place and I wouldn’t know.

Hi @James_Fitzell,

Thank you for taking the time to share these details so precisely. No doubt this will inform the product and development teams’ efforts.

I’ll keep this thread open for a day to allow you to correct my understanding of your recent post. From my reading, what you’re experiencing is far from ideal but remains expected behavior for the current production release of Android Auto compatibility. Keep an eye on Software Release Notes and Early Access for additional improvements in this area, as Android Auto remains a priority. If you experience any change in this behavior, reach out in a new topic thread and we’ll respond promptly. Thanks!
