Describe the issue

Difficulties installing roon - incomplete "installing roon" webpage

Describe your network setup

netgear ac1750 R6400 router. netgear gs108 switch.

Problem:
Install by actual roon user (on windows pc) was runnable by the user. It connected fine to the roon server running on separate ubuntu hw (located on the same lan). However, roon running on windows pc could not see the audio devices located on the windows PC. (it did list the audio devices running on the ubuntu server hw.). Turning windows firewall off allowed roon to see windows pc audio devices. Turning windows firewall back on allowed roon to function with windows PC audio devices. Why is it necessary to turn firewall off then on?

Is the background roonserver created and started from a windows install necessary when one is using a roon server on a separate piece of HW?

Roon install webpage is missing important items for windows install:

  1. install must be done by the actual user (i.e. not admin) because the app does not show in the start app list of other than the installing user.
  2. Uninstalls do not remove the firewall inbound rules. They need to be manually removed to stop unused rules from accumulating.
  3. With my install, windows firewall had to be turned off then on.
  4. Installs on windows runs background roonserver and raatserver process. webpage should discuss this (rather than making the user brouse around forums to find out the roon processes and their purposes).

It’s not, you have to make exceptions for Roonserver, Raatserver, and Roon in the firewall. This is because discovery is from the point of view of the RoonServer that is on Ubuntu. That RoonServer will send queries to any endpoint to see what is running on that system and the server creates the audio objects. So, in your case the Ubuntu server queries were getting blocked by the firewall. All you need to do is to make the exemptions noted in the firewall.

Hi @oliver_edwards,
Thanks for reaching out to ask us about this issue.

Like @Rugby said there’s no need to turn off the firewall. Once you’ve added the exceptions for Roonserver, Raatserver, and Roon the firewall should no longer be an issue.

No if you have a Roon server running on your network already there’s no need for another one.

We appreciate your suggestions on what to include on the install page. We’ll take them under advisement—thanks for your feedback!

If you have any further questions please let us know. We’re happy to help!

thanks both for the clarification.

Consider adding a short explanation of when PC roonserver is needed (or not) and a list of the steps to disable it and it’s firewall rules if its not needed.
