· When choosing Composer, if I use Focus on Genre I don't see all the composers which have albums in that Genre, only some of them. When I choose Album however, if I use Focus by Genre, then Focus by Composer will show all the relevant composers in the scroll down menu.
Under Albums, Focus on Classical Orchestral, I show that the scrolldown list of composers is quite long. However under Composers, Focus Classical Orchestral, only a few composers are shown.
Thanks for the screenshots and the extra detail. We’re going to run this one by the team and see what they find. We’ll follow up as soon as we have more information.
Are you still seeing this problem on the latest Roon versions? We’ll need to know if the precise steps to manifest the problem have changed at all for you. We’re so far unable to reproduce the symptom in-house. We’re unable to implement any fix without reproducing the problem ourselves, and in the absence of widespread reports, we haven’t pinned down the exact conditions that cause what you’re experiencing.
One additional detail we’d be curious to see, whether the “missing” composers appear on identified vs. unidentified albums, and whether their genre is set at the album level vs. track level, since that’s exactly the seam between the two behaviors.
With that, a few additional things to check:
Pin down one concrete example: name a specific composer that's missing under a genre, and check that composer's page: what genres are listed on the composer, and are their albums identified? This gives us a more accurate reproducible case.
Check album vs. track genre on the "missing" composers' albums, if genre is only set at track level, or only via file tags rather than Roon's genre model, the composer entity may not inherit it.
Force a re-index of the works/composer data: given the duplicate-LibraryWork warnings we see in logs, cleaning up library / re-identify the affected albums may resolve local index staleness.
The Genres are on Album level. However note that they are my customized Genres (E.g. Classical Orchestral)
Example: On Composers View I focus on Classical Orchestral and Mozart is missing.
On Mozart page, indeed there are no Genres, but there are several identified albums with Classical Orchestral genre, as there are also others. So it seems that Mozart did not inherit the genres from the albums.
So the mechanism is: your Mozart albums are correctly tagged with the custom “Classical Orchestral” genre, but that genre isn’t rolling up to Mozart’s composer entity itself, his composer page shows no genres at all despite several identified albums carrying it. Since Focus-by-Genre on the Composers view appears to filter by the composer’s own genre field rather than checking every album a composer is credited on, any composer whose entity-level genre never got populated drops out of that filtered list, even though their albums clearly qualify.
I have 32 albums by Mozart with “Classical Orchestral” genre !
I uploaded one of them to the workdrive you sent. If you need more then let me know, but I suppose even a single album should have resulted in Mozart having that genre.
I want to clarify what’s happening here, because the behavior you’re seeing is expected given how Roon’s data model works, even though it’s not intuitive.
Genres you add yourself are stored on the album they’re applied to. They are not propagated upward to the Artist or Composer, because those are global objects in Roon’s metadata cloud index. The genres you see when focusing the Composers browser come from Roon’s own metadata associations on the composer object. That’s why your 32 albums all show under Classical Orchestral in the Albums browser, but Mozart doesn’t appear when you focus Composers on it.
If your goal is to browse composers by orchestral repertoire, two options work: focus on Roon’s built-in Orchestral subgenre, which does have composer-level associations, or apply a Roon tag directly to the composer, since tags (unlike genres) can be added to composers and used with Focus.
When I enter Artist and Focus on one of my customized genres (for instance Pop/Rock), I get all the artists which have albums in that genre which is not a Roon supplied genre. And in the Artist page, this genre is also shown. This means that the customized genre does get propagated to the Artist.
Why then is it any different with Composers ? shouldn’t be really
Composers are a fully global object, which means that their metadata are not dependent upon the relationships between local media in your library. Composers aren’t linked directly to Album, but to Compositions. This is a global relationship above the level of your Roon library.
What you’re hoping to accomplish might actually be possible (we spoke too soon earlier) but it will depend on your Genre Mappings and your Genre Settings.
Do you have “use genres extracted from file tags” toggled on in your Genre Settings? Can you share a screenshot of your Genre Mappings page?
Thank you for confirming. We’ll be much better equipped to help if we know the specific settings you have toggled under Library -> Import Settings:
At your convenience, please upload a screenshot and we’ll promptly follow up. This will help us pin down whether or not what you’re seeing is expected. Thank you!
