Incomplete music library scan and network share disconnection on Roon Nucleus One (ref#7GM73C)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Music won’t play or issues with my library

Music won’t play or issues with my library

· Local files won't import or appear

Tell us what's going on

· My set up is Roon version 2.71 (build 1683) running on Roon Nucleus One server. Computer is a Mac Studio 2025 M3 Ultra MacOS Tahoe 26.2.2. All my music is stored on an Samsung T7 Shield Portable SSD 4TB, USB 3.2 Gen 2 which is connected to the Mac Studio via USB. This external drive is shared on my local network using MacOS file sharing. I use Music (iTunes previously) to manage and digitize all my music. The iTunes folder with all the music is stored on the Samsung drive and is available on the network. Roon software uses the iTunes folder on the Samsung drive available on network drive for music. In other words, the Storage folders for Roon are set up as network share. The Roon Nucleus One server is hard wired to the router via an ethernet cable.

For network share the following paths have worked. Actual IP crossed out for privacy:
smb://xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/iTunes smb://xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/Music \\xxx.xxx.xx.xxx\Music

The current problem is that Roon scans of my music library are incomplete. Roon scans these folders and stops adding artists and tracks about halfway through. I have ~1900 artists in my library but now Roon only shows 987. Although no additional tracks or artists are added the circle on the upper right hand side of the Roon Home page keeps spinning as if it were still scanning. I have tried restarting both the Mac Studio computer and the Roon nucleus one server. I have tried removing the previous network shared folders then adding them back. Nothing has solved this.

Another problem that may be related to the first problem. Frequently after the Mac is restarted, Roon no longer recognizes the network share folders and states that I have no music. I always make sure that file sharing is on the Mac. The network share folders are still there but Roon software does not seem to recognize them. I typically have to solve this by restarting the Nucleus One server, removing the previous network shared folders, then attempt to add them again. Usually it takes several attempts before Roon software recognizes the network share and starts adding music.

I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you.

Tell us about your home network

· I use eero Pro 6E mesh router (three nodes). Roon Nucleus One is plugged directly into the first node that is also connect to the Comcast cable modelm. Sometimes Avast SecureLine VPN is running on the Mac Studio but not recently as I have been troubleshooting this.

Hey @chrisrudolfmusic,

Thanks for writing in and for sharing your report!

As a good next step, we’ll want to review a fresh set of Roon Server logs from your Nucleus for deeper insight.

Can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon Server logs from your Nucleus to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Hi @Benjamin. Logs folder uploaded. Looking forward to what you find. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi @chrisrudolfmusic,

Thanks for the logs, they point to something specific.

Your Mac isn’t handing Roon the full contents of the shared folder. The listing stops partway through, alphabetically, and everything after that is invisible to Roon Server.

Starting Sept 8, the folder scan dropped from ~40 seconds to ~14, and Roon immediately removed 868 artist folders, everything from Joe Henderson Quintet to the end of the alphabet. Every scan since ends in the same place. Across all the logs Roon can see 730 artist folders, all A–J, and none from K–Z. That’s your 987 artists. The rest are never listed by the Mac, so Roon has no way to know they exist. This persisted across a Roon Server restart, a Mac restart, and two different shares, so it isn’t a network dropout.

Separately, both \192.168.y.25\Music and \192.168.y.25\iTunes are added as watched folders, and the second contains the first. Roon is indexing everything twice, 30,605 tracks, 15,009 of them hidden duplicates. Nested watched folders aren’t supported.

Suggested steps:

  1. Remove one of the two shares, keep whichever you prefer, but not both.
  2. On the Mac, open the shared music folder in Finder and scroll past Joe Henderson. If nothing after it is there, the problem is on the Mac side of the share.
  3. Run First Aid on the T7 Shield in Disk Utility. Roon is also logging I/O errors reading that folder, which points at the volume.
  4. Once the folder lists completely, remove and re-add the single watched folder for a clean pass.

The Nucleus One itself looks healthy throughout, no memory, database or CPU issues.

Let us know what step 2 shows and we’ll go from there. :+1:

Here is what I tried and the result (in italics)

  1. Remove one of the two shares, keep whichever you prefer, but not both. Kept \192.168.y.25\Music

  2. On the Mac, open the shared music folder in Finder and scroll past Joe Henderson. If nothing after it is there, the problem is on the Mac side of the share. All the files past Joe Henderson are there in the Music folder with the tracks as well.

  3. Run First Aid on the T7 Shield in Disk Utility. Roon is also logging I/O errors reading that folder, which points at the volume. Ran Disk Utility First Aid on T7 Disk with Music collection. Had to close Roon and File sharing before disk would unmount to run Disk First Aid

  4. Once the folder lists completely, remove and re-add the single watched folder for a clean pass. Removed the other network watch folders. Rescanned \192.168.y.25\Music again and got the same result. Only 988 artists and nothing beyond the Joe Henderson Quintet. When I search on the home page for other artists past that one alphabetically, artists like Joe Lovano, Joe Jackson, Rush or Tool show up in the search but when I click on the link the Roon symbol shows up with "Loading artist but nothing ever appears. Same behavior as before, circle on the home page keeps spinning but somehow the scan stops halfway through.

Also, after trying this, I removed \\192.168.y.25\Music, added \\192.168.y.25\iTunes and then rescanned. Same result. Scan stops at Joe Henderson Quintet.

I tried one more test. I took the T7 ssd drive and connected it to the rear of the Nucleus One server. The previous network share of the T7 drive was removed from Roon. I set the T7 drive attached to the Nucleus One as the storage folder and rescanned. All of my music is there now in Roon software. So, it seems that since Sept. 8th, when the external hard drive originally attached to the Mac Studio is shared on the network, Roon stops scanning at some point and my music collection is incompletely analyzed by the Roon software. The issue seems to be Roon scanning a drive attached to the Mac that is shared on the local network. But this is a recent problem as I ran this set up for over a year without a problem. The only recent change to my Mac Studio was update the MacOS to Tahoe 26.6.2. I still need the T7 drive attached to the Mac Studio though and Roon scanning that drive completely. Hope this info is helpful.

Hello @chrisrudolfmusic

That last test settles it. Attaching the T7 directly to the Nucleus and getting your whole library back rules out the drive, the files, Roon’s database and the Nucleus itself.

One correction on step 3: the I/O errors in your logs are on the network mount on the Nucleus, not on the T7 itself, so Disk Utility was looking in the wrong place. The same goes for the “possibly corrupt file” warnings. They come from that unreadable network path rather than from damaged files.

Worth saying plainly, since this has been going on for two weeks: nothing was lost. The artists stopped appearing because the Nucleus could not read the folder listing from your Mac’s share past a certain point, so it had no way to know they were there. Your music never moved, which is what your own test proved.

Two things would help us pin down which side of the share is at fault.

First, please connect to the same share from another computer, a PC or a second Mac, and count the artist folders. If it also stops around Joe Henderson, the problem is in what your Mac serves out, for every client.

Second, we need a fresh set of logs from the Nucleus taken after yesterday’s tests. We cannot pull those from our side for that machine, so please upload them the way you did before:
https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/collection/nocvrfc5b2ddab55140af8640f1d7ce13291e/external

In the meantime you can have both of the things you need. Leave the T7 on the Nucleus, where Roon sees all of it, and reach it from the Mac over the network instead of the other way around. Roon OS shares connected USB storage as an ordinary SMB share, so your Music app can work from it much as it does today:

One more thing that would help. When did you update the Mac Studio to Tahoe 26.6.2? Roon’s scans changed behaviour on 8 September, and if the update landed around the same time, that tells us where to look. If it was weeks earlier, we can rule it out.

I connected to the network shared Music folder on the T7 drive from two different Macs. In both cases, all the artists and tracks in my music folder are there past Joe Henderson. So, it appears that the Mac Studio serves out everything from the attached T7 drive that is there (at least in the /iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/ folder).

Fresh set of logs just uploaded. Just an FYI, yesterday I logged out of Roon on Nucleus One server and set it up temporarily on another Mac for a completely unrelated reason. Don’t let that throw you off when you go through the logs. As of now, I’m logged back into the Nucleus One server.

So…I leave the T7 external drive attached to the Nucleus One server and everything works fine with Roon. That’s good. However, how can I still access the data on that drive from my Mac over my local network? I’m studying the article you sent and its not yet totally clear how to do this. For example, so that I can point Apple Music to that drive to burn discs to that folder. What network path would I use to do see the attached T7 USB drive? What smb://… path to mount the T7 drive attached to the Nucleus One server and then be able to send my Music there? If I can get this working then, yes, I’d rather leave the Music drive directly attached to the Nucleus One server.

I updated the Mac Studio to Tahoe 26.6.2 on Sept. 2, 2026 at 12:50 PM. Hope that helps.

Hello @chrisrudolfmusic

The test on the two other Macs is exactly what we needed, thank you for running it.

To reach the T7 now that it is attached to the Nucleus:

  1. In Finder, press Command + K to open Connect to Server.
  2. Enter smb://NUCLEUSONE/Data/Storage and click Connect. If the name does not resolve on your network, please use your Nucleus’s IP address instead, for example smb://192.168.1.50/Data/Storage.
  3. If you are asked for a username and password, enter Guest for both.
  4. Open the folder for the T7. Roon OS names it from the drive’s volume name and model rather than calling it InternalStorage, so please use whatever folder you find there.

To have it mount automatically instead of connecting each time: with the share mounted, open System Settings, go to General, then Login Items, click the + button, select the mounted share, and click Add.

Once that is in place you can point Apple Music at that folder. Anything you add goes to the same place Roon is watching, so new rips appear in Roon without any extra step. You can confirm what Roon is watching under Settings, then Storage.
