Describe the issue
Sometimes on wifi/cellular it works when the laptop interface is asleep and I'm out the house. it always seem to work when the laptop is awake and I'm on cellular.
If your Roon Server is running on the laptop, then what you’re describing is expected behavior.
For Roon Remote and ARC to work reliably when you’re away from home, the Roon Server must be online and awake at all times. If the laptop goes to sleep, the server process is suspended and remote connections will become inconsistent or fail entirely.
This explains why:
Connectivity works when the laptop is awake, and
Behavior becomes inconsistent or fails when the laptop is asleep and you’re out of the house.
To ensure stable remote access, we recommend:
Preventing the laptop from sleeping while Roon Server is running, or
Running Roon Server on a device that is designed to stay online continuously (such as a Nucleus, NAS, or always-on desktop/server).
As long as the server remains online, ARC and Roon Remote should behave consistently.
Let us know if you have any questions about configuring sleep settings or moving the server to a dedicated device.
Depending on the operating system, you might be able to configure settings or install a third-party app to keep the network interface active even if the machine’s power-saving settings hibernate the GUI. I recommend posting in Tinkering to solicit recommendations from other users if you go this route.
The ideal long-term solution would be to install a headless or dedicated server with evergreen network access.
We’d be more than happy to answer any follow-up questions or clarify any details.
