Description of Issue

Hey!

At first, Roon only stopped while playing internet radio, after which the radio had to be turned on again. Music played from SSD did not stop. At that time, I had a choice of AirPlay and the ALSA i2s-master for the wi-fi connection (I usually chose the ALSA i2s-master for playing music).

About a month ago (maybe after some update) the option to choose the i2s-master ALSA disappeared, the music can only be played via AirPlay, while there were short pauses in the music being played, they happen at intervals of 0.5 - 1 minute and there can be several, one after another.

This is so annoying that I decided to start this thread. The difference, however, is that when playing internet radio, the music does not stop completely and there is no need to turn the radio on again, but there are these annoying pauses both in the music played from the radio and from the SSD disk.

The HUAWEI router is quite old, so this week I will replace it with the Asus 4G-AC86U.
I am also counting on your reliable help. I like Roon, but the one that works well.

Regards,
sushi

Hey @sushiswap!

What a great username! Welcome to our Roon Community, it’s nice to see you. We’re sorry though that your first visit was prompted by a snag you’ve had in Roon. You’ve found the perfect place to submit your questions and get help.

The issues you’ve described can often be due to networking troubles. So, recognizing that your router is a weak point in your networking setup and starting there is a good strategy.

Please take a look at our Networking Best Practices article while you’re waiting to make the switch to the ASUS unit. You’ll find a wealth of good advice here:

In the Networking Best Practices its also noted that the Core machine should be Ethernet connected.

Wifi is a rather non optimal connection for interactive traffic as its not Full Duplex - this is quite possibly the main issue you are having. Try connecting the Core via a LAN cable.

Hey brother!

Asus router has already arrived so i am implementing “Networking Best Practices”:

  1. only laptop is connected to a router on the 5GHz band
  2. turned on in LAN settings: IPTV / LAN Port / Select ISP Profile > Hinet MOD
Speecial Applications / Enable multicast routing > Enable

Now, when selecting Select ISP Profile / None, all LAN ports have multicast routing enabled.

It was the only way I could enable multicast routing, i tried differently a few times, but the router did not see minidsp on the network then.

Unfortunately, short pauses still occur when playing music (two or three pauses for each track played, both from the radio and from the ssd / roon core).

I have no more ideas at the moment.

I will mention once again the strange disappearance of the drivers from which I played earlier roon via wi-fi: i2s-master ALSA. From that period, I remember that windows could update because afrer i2s-master ALSA disappear, Nahimic audio drivers started loading when windows started. I have already removed Nahimic from the system (only WASAPI and ASIO remain) but nothing positive happened. I did not have these problems while playing wi-fi via the i2s-master ALSA. But I completely don’t understand their disappearances from the roon or windows…

I tried to connect a laptop with a router via the LAN and GbE port.
Unfortunately i did not succeed (i wanted to check in this way if the short pauses would still occur).
Digging into the router’s settings is as complicated for me as reading Thai.

Much earlier, when the minidsp was not connected to the system, i connected laptop via usb directly to the dac, and it was ok.

However, minidsp is essential here: integration of subwoofers and acoustic correction, i can’t do it without minidsp.
