I am currently using Roon with my apple Mac as the core to my formation duo speakers. I would like to know if it is possible for me to use an external dac into my Mac through Roon and if so how?
How is that even useful? If you had written “into my formation duo speakers” instead, that would make more sense IMHO. But anyway, read the manual of your Mac or speaker and see if they have a suitable analog input for a DAC. Then choose a Roon Ready DAC or any DAC with USB input, driven from the Mac (so not really an option to feed the Mac), feeding the speakers.
Update: Roon is about digital Audio (streams or files) and can’t handle analog audio (the output of a DAC). Roon also currently does not provide any easy to use general purpose inputs (for digital audio) – if this is what the inquiry is about. There might be third-party products that can send digital audio to Roon, the currently known device to me is a turntable. Some also third-party extensions exist that can convert (analog?) audio into a radio station stream for Roon’s Internet Radio feature (may not sound the best and adds a lot of latency, no metadata support).
PS: Given the nature of the speakers, it is very likely that an analog input gets digitized (ADC) again and ultimately converted to anlog by the DAC built into the speakers.

I know that and the OP probably too. So why connect a DAC to the Mac or the speakers at all?
What has analog audio to do with Roon? Why convert digital to analog if it likely has to be converted back to digital again anyway?

Totally agree
Maybe @adele530 can expand further on what they are attempting to do.
It is absolutely possible to use Roon with an external DAC. You can refer to this helpful article for guidance on setting up your DAC with Roon.
That said, since the Formation Duo is a Roon Ready device, it already benefits from the full capabilities of the RAAT protocol, which delivers audiophile-grade streaming quality. With this in mind, could you kindly clarify the intended purpose of adding an external DAC to your setup?
Additionally, based on the Formation Duo’s specifications, the device supports only WiFi and Ethernet connections. The USB port is designated for service purposes only. Could you please share how you were planning to connect your DAC to the Formation Duo?
We’re happy to assist further once we better understand your use case.
