Intermittent audio device listing on MacBook Pro with Sequoia 15.7.2 (ref#RKQOTR)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I regularly cannot play music to my Macbook Pro (M1, running Sequoia 15.7.2). When I navigate to the Audio section of the preferences, it is constantly redrawing and "This Mac" disappears and reappears. It never has any audio device listed under it, though. A reboot will fix this temporarily, but it always happens again.

Hello @Richard_Kolkovich,

Thank you for reaching out to Roon Support.

macOS Sequoia (version 15 and later) introduces stricter and less transparent network security controls compared to earlier macOS versions.

Please navigate to macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and make sure that both Roon and Roon Server are allowed access.

If they are already enabled, try toggling them off, then on again. After that, reboot your Mac and check whether the issue still persists.

If the problem continues, please reproduce it once more, note the exact timestamp when it occurs, and share that information here so we can investigate further.

Hello @Richard_Kolkovich ,

We received your message letting us know you’d like the thread reopened and that the issue is still ongoing. Can you please let us know the results of the Local Network toggle, was there any effect at all? If there was no effect, please provide a timestamp (local time + date) when the issue next occurs, and we’ll enable diagnostics mode. Thanks!

Hi,

It seems like my initial workaround doesn’t actually work - i.e. I still can’t see the locally connected devices after rebooting. Toggling the security setting does not seem to do anything either.

To be clear, I can control other zones in my Roon system, but I cannot play directly to my laptop.

I tried this sometime this weekend, but I can relaunch Roon at any time to give you diagnostic logs

Hi @Richard_Kolkovich,

Thanks for the follow-up and for letting us know you’re still having issues!

Just to triple confirm, can you also test:

  1. First, navigate to macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and re-toggle
  2. Then, reboot your Mac

Let us know if this specific process helps. Thank you! :raising_hands:

Hi @Richard_Kolkovich,

Try navigating to WiFi Settings → Network Details (for your network) and setting Private Address to fixed.

If this does not help, then open the Terminal from Applications → Utilities and enter this is the command terminal:

sudo killall coreaudiod

This will kill and restart coreaudio, which should prompt it to do a full device announcement cycle and handshake with RAAT when it comes back online.

Let us know what you see in Settings → Audio in Roon after taking these two steps. Thanks!

Connor,

I’m seeing the same thing after both those modifications. FWIW, my MBP is connected via Ethernet.

I tried both killing coreaudiod with and without Roon running.

Hello @Richard_Kolkovich ,

Can you please let us know the time + date when the issue next occurs on your end? Just to clarify, the Mac is not the Roon Server when this occurs, is that correct? Are there any additional firewalls that could be interfering?

I was trying it yesterday, but this is my work laptop, so the next time I’ll be on it will be Monday.

To clarify:

  • my Roon server is running on a completely separate Linux machine on the LAN
  • the Macbook can connect to the Roon server and control other zones with no problem
  • the problem is isolated to local zones on the Macbook (i.e. - playing to its speakers or my DAC on my desk)
  • there are no firewalls that I know of that would be interfering - the company security guy is also a Roon user

I’ll chime back in Monday when I can try this again.

Hello @Richard_Kolkovich ,

Thanks for that clarification. We will await your response when you’ve had a chance to look into this further!

OK, I just launched Roon this morning to the same issue.

Hi @Richard_Kolkovich,

There are often times company-installed security protocols that can interfere with the underlying discovery mechanism within Roon.

Is this something you can confidently confirm is not the case with your work laptop?

As a next step, let’s see if refreshing the RAATServer settings on the issue Mac may help:

  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

Thank you!

That didn’t work, unfortunately.

I’ve confirmed there is nothing on my work laptop that should be preventing Roon from seeing local devices.
