Intermittent Connectivity and Playback Issues with Roon on Mac Mini (ref#562J0X)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· App interface looks or behaves oddly

Tell us what's going on

· I run a Roon server on a Mac mini, and I use Roon remote across multiple devices. I get a rotating menu of error message (waiting for your Roon server, error loading saved page). If I go to my History, it shows my history for 2-3 seconds, then the page refreshes and it brings me to the top of the menu. I can see songs sometimes but I can't press play button.

I am connected to Qobuz, and I can access the Qobuz section for a couple seconds, but then that goes blank and I get that same rotating menu of error messages. I am simply unable to press play. Sometimes I will be able to press play and it does play music (Library or Qobuz streaming) and in those rare cases it will continue to play with no problems (though the display issues above still occur) but as soon as I stop the music, I won't be able to play music again.

All remotes and the server are updated to the latest version of Roon and Qobuz and the OS. I use a Holo Red streamer for streaming and that has been upgraded to the latest OS as well.

I have no issues connecting to the Mini via SSH or Screen Sharing, which is connected via Ethernet.

Tell us about your home network

· I use Asus ZenWifi and a Powerline Adapter to run off Ethernet. All connected devices have no issue connecting to the network, it is just Roon that has issues. There is no issue with access. to the internet. I do not use a VPN.

Using powerline adaptors is discouraged when running Roon, with users often experiencing connectivity issues. Ideally, use a long Ethernet cable (even as a test between router and Roon server.)

I will just say they worked flawlessly for 4 years and then over the last couple weeks, the problems have been incessant.

Hey @Jake_Soroka.

Thanks for reaching out. Looking over your diagnostics, we see over 1,000 AirPlay devices associated with your account at the moment, including a lot of duplicates, and we suspect that the Airplay devices disconnecting/reconnecting constantly may be related to what you are seeing. Please let us know the exact local time and date the next time the issue appears, and we will enable diagnostics and ask the team to review the findings.

Thank you! That’s very helpful. When I first had some issues, I diagnosed an OS issue on my Holo Red. It was on 3.25.26 and I updated to 3.26.26. It’s a raspberry pi-based streamer. When I was on the previous version, everytime I would reboot, the devices on my network would get a conflict with the Pi and would increment to a new device name (numerically). The upgrade stopped that and have not had that issue since July 14th, so if you see any such instances since then that could be an issue. Or it could be a hangover from when that problem existed. I do not use Airplay, so I’m happy to disable that on the Mini, where the Roon server exists.

Could you remove all the Airplay device instances?

Last night, for what it’s worth, the Roon remote was playing songs for several hours and stayed playing. I paused it late last night, but today it’s still in good shape. No refreshing of the menus, no freezing, no error messages. So I will come back here if that occurs again, or rather when.

Hey @Jake_Soroka,

Glad to hear things have been stable since last night, that’s a good sign, and the timing lines up with resolving the device-name conflicts from your Holo Red after the July 14th update.

On your question: we’re not able to remove AirPlay device instances from our end. AirPlay zones aren’t something we store and delete for you, they’re discovered live on your network, so they get re-advertised and repopulated as long as the devices (or their leftover duplicate names) are broadcasting on the LAN. The cleanup really has to happen at the network/device level.

The good news is that since you don’t use AirPlay, you can stop Roon from surfacing them at all. In Roon, go to Settings → Audio, find the AirPlay devices listed there, and disable the ones you don’t want. That keeps the constant connect/disconnect churn from affecting your experience. Clearing out the stale duplicates at the source (a reboot of the affected devices, and confirming the Pi is no longer incrementing names) should keep them from coming back.

Since the Roon Server lives on your Mac mini and you don’t use AirPlay, disabling AirPlay there is a reasonable step too.

Please do come back with the exact local date and time if the connectivity/playback issues return, we’ll enable diagnostics and have the team take a closer look.

I hope this helps, but I don’t have any enabled Airplay devices (and don’t believe I ever had), so there’s nothing to disable. Unless I’m misunderstanding you?

I will also just say that the refresh issues have returned today, July 29 at 7:44am PST. Whether I’m in my Library, History or Qobuz the screen will refresh ever 1-2 seconds, making it unusable. For History and Library, if I scroll down it will refresh and return to the top of the page.

For Qobuz, it will refresh but will not default to the top of the page.

Hey @Jake_Soroka,

Thanks for the update! A follow-up question for you: did you ever use Time Machine or a different third-party software to migrate and clone your macOS database across your “Air Jake" or “jakebook pro” machines?

We’re seeing a conflict in machine IDs that could be spawning the issues you’re seeing.

Let us know and we can send over specific instructions on how to resolve this. Thank you!

No, I haven’t used anything like that to migrate. I suspect you’re seeing the issue where my Holo Red streamer (a Pi-based streamer) was broadcasting my device IDs on its own, which then caused duplication from the devices themselves because their name was taken on the network. That has been resolved but it’s possible that there remains some remnants of that issue on my network.

Hey @Jake_Soroka,

Thanks for the update. If you had Roon open on both the Mac Mini and your MacBook, did the issue only happen in that setup? If you quit Roon on the MacBook, did the behavior stop?

Thanks @noris . I just want to make sure I’m answering you properly - I try to never use the Roon Remote on the Mini, since it’s running the server. I do have a 2nd laptop with Remote, and they behave similarly (though not identically - sometimes one will be smoother than the other at any given moment - but then will inevitably become unusable too).

For what it’s worth, I have been using Roon today without any issues at all, it’s all behaving normally today so far.

Hey @Jake_Soroka,

Thanks for the update! Since a few days have passed, and a new Roon update has been released, are you still having issues?
