Intermittent Internet Radio Playback Issues on Roon with Cambridge Audio CXNV2 (ref#HV4RDO)

Describe the issue

Good afternoon, I've posted once about this before on the support forums and tried the changes recommended but am still having issues streaming internet radio stations via Roon. I'm using a Cambridge Audio CXNV2 as my main streaming source, but I also stream to my office PC via Roon. The internet radio stream stops after a short period of play, and I have to go back into Roon and restart or change the station. The playback continues for a while (a few minutes, rarely more than an hour or two) before stopping again. I mostly listen to "KCMP The Current", or the Radio Paradise channels (Rock or Main) when streaming internet radio.

Describe your network setup

I completely changed my ISP and my hardware to Google Fiber a few months ago, an unrelated decision I thought would help with these dropouts, but it did not help. My home network has a 3GB fiber feed with CAT 6 or 5E throughout the home, provided by Google Fiber. Even after switching to the new ISP with a new router and two new range extenders from G-Fiber, I still get live internet radio dropouts. I had an ASUS Router with two ZenWiFi range extenders in my old network setup and am now using Google Fiber with their Wi-Fi 6E Router and two Wi-Fi 6E Extenders. My Roon server runs on my home office PC, running Windows 11 Home Edition, Version 25H2, OS build 26200.7171, Windows Feature Experience Pack 000.26100.265.0.

My Cambridge Audio CXNv2 is hardwired to my home network by plugging into the CAT6 connection on the G-Fiber Range Extender. I also changed out my home PC and did a fresh installation of Roon a few months ago but still get these daily radio dropouts. If I stream from my iPhone or iPad to the CXNv2 using ApplePlay (not through Roon), it seems to stream indefinitely without dropping out. I've read a lot of the threads on internet stability causing dropouts and tried the solutions I could implement, but my network seems stable for everything besides Roon at this point. Anything else I can try? I've had a lifetime subscription for many years and love Roon, but these internet radio dropouts are very frustrating. Thanks for any suggestions you have. Happy to send you my Roon logs when needed.

Hello @Tony_Zimmerman ,

Thanks for reacing out. We have seen users have a better experience in the past if they change their Router’s DNS servers from the ISP provided ones to Cloudflare DNS, Quad9 or Google DNS. Can you please give this a try and let me know if it helps?

If the DNS change does not help, can you please let us know the exact local time + date of the next failure? We’ll enable diagnostics mode to see if log contain any helpful clues.

DNS change did not fix the issue. I manually entered the Google DNS server settings in my router and on my PC on 11/18, even though I recently changed over to G-Fiber and upgraded all my network equipment in an effort to troubleshoot this Roon streaming issue. The DNS settings were previously set to Default. on 11/19 I kept getting dropouts on the Google DNS servers so I changed the settings from Google to Cloudfare in both my PC Network settings and in the G-Fiber router. I lost KCMP The Current on 11/19 @ 0801 and restarted it. The Current stopped again after a few minutes, so I switched to streaming Radio Paradise, which stopped at 0825 or 0826 on 11/19. I’m on the east coast. Sometimes when the stations stop there is a decay in the sound, almost like it’s reverse buffering, as the sound starts to drop out. After a second or two of intermittent sound, the stream stops completely and the Roon image shows on my Cambridge Audio CXNv2. I’ve also confirmed I can stream my desired internet radio stations (albeit at lower quality) using the native Cambridge Audio StreamMagic app for hours/days without stopping.

For background, I had the same Roon internet radio dropout problem when using my Asus router with a local ISP, which also had two ZenWiFi mesh network extenders attached. I changed to G-Fiber a few months ago. I have Cat 5e or Cat6 hardwired in all the rooms of my house and fiber from Google servers to the house. I’m on a 3GB plan and routinely see those speeds on SpeedTest.

I uploaded a log file from Roon a few days ago and previously shared dropout times related to that log file. I can send a new set of logs if needed. This has been frustrating, and the dropout frequency seems to be increasing. I have no issues streaming any of those internet radio stations when pushed from my iPhone to the Cambridge Audio via AirPlay, but the sound quality is poor so I want to use Roon if I can. I can stream Radio Paradise in FLAC using my Cambridge Audio, when it works. I’ve tried streaming the MP3 and AAC versions of KCMP The Current, and both stop after a few minutes. I also don’t have problems streaming audio files from my PC, where Roon Server is running, to my Cambridge Audio CXNv2. I’v built hour’s long playlists which streamed fine.

I really appreciate your help.

Tony

always I shutdown Roon yesterday (11/20/25) and used the native Cambridge Audio app, StreamMagic, to stream internet radio all day with no dropouts, so I know my network will stream this content uninterrupted using a different service. I started Roon today (11/21/25) around 1145 Eastern time, and Roon stopped my internet radio stream at 1201 Eastern. I immediately restarted “KCMP The Current” and it played until 1204 or 1205, when it stopped again.

One thing I noticed while streaming different internet radio stations using the StreamMagic app was that I periodically heard some dropouts or faded signal, but the station never fully stopped playing. Sounds odd on a digital system, but on Roon if the signal starts to attenuate the station stops, but on the Cambridge Audio StreamMagic app the internet radio station continues playing in a spotty fashion for a second or two, but resumes at full strength without me having to restart it. Maybe buffering differences are causing the stations to stop in Roon but not StreamMagic? Not sure this observation helps you with troubleshooting Roon on my network, but it seemed odd behavior between the Roon and the Cambridge Audio StreamMagic apps.

My Roon Server is running on a Windows 11 PC on my personal profile. My wife uses that computer also, and logs in on a separate account. I always leave Roon running in the background in my account, which is locked in the background while she uses the PC. I thought about moving Roon to a Windows laptop I have here, but don’t want to add any variables. If that would help, I can try installing the Roon/RAAT server software on my laptop and remove from my desktop PC.

Thanks,
Tony

Hey @Tony_Zimmerman,

Thanks for the additional information and for sending logs over! It looks like you’ve sent over a set of Roon logs - we unfortunately need to review a set of Roon Server logs to better analyze the source of the stoppage.

If you could please bring your Server back online, we’ve enabled diagnostic mode, which should share a set of fresh Roon Server logs with our server.

After going through the above, it would definitely be a useful piece of information to know - if you continue to run into the same issues no matter the machine running Roon Server.

We’ll be awaiting your response, thank you Tony! :folded_hands:

Hi Benjamin,
I’ve re-started the Roon server on my desktop PC, on 11/25/2025 at around 1005, where I’ve been experiencing these dropouts for months. I streamed an internet radio station, “KCMP The Current” and Roon stopped almost immediately at 10:08 or 10:09 Eastern. I restarted “KCMP The Current”, and it stopped a few seconds later. I’ve also tried streaming many other internet radio stations but all stop playing after a relatively short time. I have not had problems streaming songs saved on my office PC to my Living Room zone. I will let Roon run to generate some more data for troubleshooting and will wait until after the Thanksgiving holiday to change the Roon server over to my laptop. I’ll update the thread once I’ve moved Roon to my Windows 11 laptop.

Another data point to consider: generally, I stream Roon to my office PC and my Living Room zone (via Cambridge Audio CXNv2) as a single group, since I can hear unified audio on the main floor of my house, regardless of the room I’m in. I’ve also tried troubleshooting this issue myself by streaming internet radio via Roon only to my office PC zone, or to the Living Room zone (not grouped), and still get drops frequently regardless of the zone I stream to or if it’s a single or grouped zone. Not sure this is relevant but sending just in case.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Tony

Good day @Tony_Zimmerman !

I hope you’re doing well today.

Thanks for sharing the details about your set up.

As a next step of testing I’d ask you to try to test out the Roon Server installation on your windows laptop and if possible please try to connect your Cambridge CXN v2 directly to the master wi fi instead of extender.

Let us know please whether it is any helpful.

Regards.

Hi Alex,
I will install Roon on my laptop after the Thanksgiving holiday and post when finished.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Tony

Good day @Tony_Zimmerman !

Okay, please keep us posted.

Have a nice holidays!

Regards

Hi Alex,
The Roon server is running (and randomly stopping) on my office workstation again. I’ve ordered a 200’ CAT6 cable to connect my Cambridge Audio CXNv2 directly to my router in the basement smart home hub. That’s the only way I could bypass the switch inside the home smart hub, which has all the wired Cat 5E or 6 connections for all my rooms.

I’ll continue restarting Roon server for your troubleshooting logs until this new cable arrives, estimated 12/6. We also switch to computer audio files or other streaming services like Spotify periodically, if Roon stops too often. Please do not close this post yet, since I’m in a holding pattern until the cable arrives.

Thanks,
Tony

Hey @Tony_Zimmerman,

Thanks for the update - we won’t close anything until you’ve had ample time to test and confirm that things are functioning better for you.

I do believe testing a direct hardwire connection could be quite helpful for you - here is a recent log trace around playback stopping for you:

11/30 11:20:14 Warn: [ZimCXNv2] [zoneplayer/raat] Too many dropouts (>3s dropped out in the last 30s). Killing stream
11/30 11:20:14 Trace: [ZimCXNv2] [zoneplayer/raat] too many dropouts. stopping stream

A hardwire connection should definitely help with overall stability. We’ll be monitoring for your reply, thank you!

Benjamin,
I know you guys troubleshoot a lot of different issues so it would be hard to keep them separate, but I am already on a hard-wired connection to my Cambridge Audio CXNv2 and have been for several years. My original connection goes through a CAT-6 network switch in my smart home hub to be distributed throughout my house and every room has a CAT-5e or CAT-6 wall plug.

I thought this step to connect directly to the router was to eliminate any interconnected wiring or the switch itself, since I’ve never used Wi-Fi to stream through this system. Still happy to bypass my network switch and living room wall plug by running a 200 ft. patch cord to my basement, since it eliminates two possible culprits. I’ll let you know when I receive the longer patch cord I had to order.

In my thread above I also described some signal loss when I was using the native Cambridge Audio StreamMagic app to stream these internet radio stations. I’ve periodically heard the station start to drop or fade; with audio stopping for a few seconds and then resuming with no action by me. I don’t know if the StreamMagic software has a larger buffer so it can tolerate longer dropouts than Roon, or if it is something else. I did not have to push play on the Cambridge Audio StreamMagic app for the music to resume, the audio just picks back up after a few seconds. On Roon, once the audio stops it will not resume. I have to push play again or select a different station. Just sharing what I observed in case it helps.

The dropouts seem to happen most frequently with internet radio station “KCMP The Current”, from Saint Paul, Minnesota. I’ve tried using the AAC and MP3 as my default stream and get drops on both. I’ve also noticed the music stopping during song transitions, when their local DJs talk between songs. Not sure this is relevant but want to share what I’m seeing in case it helps.

Hope you guys had a happy holiday!

Tony

Hey @Tony_Zimmerman,

Yes - apologies for any confusion, the goal was to bypass all other network gear temporarily.

We’re not able to comment on the StreamMagic software, but thanks for including this info as well.

We’ll be monitoring for your reply, thank you! :+1:

Good morning. I received the long CAT6 patch cord and connected it to my router this morning, 12/6 at ~9:00 Eastern time. I verified the CXNv2 was properly assigned an IP address and on my network, then I started streaming internet radio station “KCMP The Current” and it stopped almost immediately while the standard station identifier stuff was being said by the DJ. I restarted the same radio station and it stopped again right away. I waited a little longer and started The Current, and it played for about 45 minutes before stopping again. I restarted it at 1008 and again as the normal station identifier stuff (no music, just the DJ naming the station…) was coming through it stopped again. I restarted again at 1010 and it stopped again as the station identifier was playing (again). I restarted at 1011 and the station is now streaming Gloria by U2, so when the stream had an audio signal it continued. Not sure if the dropouts are related to differences in signal quality between the songs vs. the DJ commentary or station identifiers that play between some songs.

I’ll let this stream over the weekend and try several different radio stations, to see if it is an internet radio issue or more a problem with “KCMP The Current”.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can try. I still have not installed Roon on my spare Windows laptop and can try that next, if needed.

Thanks,
Tony
