Detailed description of issue: Danish Radio stations on 320 kpbs AAC are subject to an old and known bug in the Roon software, which supposedly should result in a 30 minute delay, cf. this support ticket and its links to relevant posts - Intermittent playback issues with Danish Radio P1 on Roon (ref#AJMCMU) - #6 by Hans_N reported by @Hans_N .
I get both the 30 minute delay and then sometimes also a continued replay of those first 30 minutes. This has happened several times, latest today this afternoon around 14:00 hrs Danish time where I had the same 30 minutes from DR P8 repeated 4 times before I stopped it. It happened yesterday also.
Switching to the alternative 128 kbps mp3 stream for DR P8, the streaming stops occasionally. This happened also this afternoon.
Both cases described above are similar to what has happened many times before while listening mainly to DR P2 and DR P8. Today, however, it happened also after I - for test purposes - had made a full reset of my Icotera i4850 router and Zyxel GS1100-16 switch.
I find it quite unsatisfactory not to be able to get a decent and smooth experience of playing my favorite radio stations via Roon. Being a lifetime subscriber, I currently have no alternative setup and I hope you can help me solve this, which apparently is a problem also for a number of other Roon aficionados who want to listen to the non-commercial Danish Radio stations (you can see this via the links in the above referred earlier support ticket).
I should mention also, that my internet connection is 1000 Mbit via optical fiber. It is stable and there are no problems when streaming video and tv.
I have verified that none of the above described problems occur when streaming the same radio station URLs in VLC installed on a PC with cabled ethernet connection.
Thank you @daniel. I have looked into the Icotera i4850. The documentation I find online says it has QoS, but I don’t find any settings in the interface. Maybe I am overlooking something? I have asked my ISPs support if they see anything unusual from their side, which they don’t. I am waiting for their answer on whether or not QoS is managed from their side. If you have any suggestion where to find the QoS setting, please let me know.
At some point I might have the time to look into QoS settings and trying to understand these. But before that, can someone, perhaps @Daniel or @Benjamin, explain how come a router setting (QoS) can be a problem, when we can stream the highest resolution Qobuz with no problem at all, while streaming the lowest possible resolution radio (all from Danish Radio) sometime leads to stopping?
We re-checked our ticketing system and it looks like there is a ticket for a similar behavior regarding the 30-minute playback you are describing. We’re going to reach out to the team to see if we can review this ticket once more and we’ll let you know once we’ve had a chance to discuss this with them.
Thank you for looking into this and for bringing it to the attention of the right people. Yes, I saw others mention it, also related to streaming from other broadcasters. Here is what I saw, in case you found something else: Some HLS Live Radio Streams Play With 30 Min Delay [Ticket In] - #18 by noris. @BrianW mentioned somewhere that he thought the bug had been dealt with a long time ago, and that it resurfaced when Danish Radio stations were updated to the currently available 320 kbps streams.
Hi Kassoe, Thanks for remembering. Yes, the update from my side is that it now seems to be ok again. I am not aware of who or what fixed it, but I am thankful. Having the 7am news at 7am instead of 7:30 is quite nice.
I am still having trouble with unstability of my Sonos endpoints. But that is another thread…
@Jorgen_Dybro, I believe you get the tramsmission on time because it has default been downgraded to 128 kbps mp3. This thread relates to the 320 kbps AAC stream, which is much to prefer if played on hi-fi equipment. You have the option to select the quality of the stream shown at the bottom of the screen shot shown below.
Thank you for your patience. Here’s the situation -
These radio stations have a particular implementation that is handled differently in VLC than in Roon - specifically, they distribute audio in 30-minute segments, and Roon defaults to a different segment than either VLC or the live stream URL.
This particular ticket had been deprioritized. We’re obviously raising the priority now.
This fix will soon populate in Early Access where you can test it. We’ll notify you here when that occurs.
Hi @connor. Thank you very much for this. It is appreciated. I consider the current workaround (downgrading to default playing of 128 kpbs) a reasonable way to keep my local WAF of Roon at an acceptable level
However, I look forward to being able the listen my preferred radio stations with a decent hi-fi quality again.
Will you look into also why the 128 kpbs stream often stops? This would obviously have a lower priority for me.
For some reason the page at dr.dk where the direct links to streaming links has disappeared. I have asked DR support what happened. I looked for it, because there seems to be a discrepancy between some high-res streams (e.g. DR P2) in Roon are available as 320 kbps whereas DR P8 seems to be available only as 192 kbps, at least as of now in Roon.
