Intermittent Laptop Audio Source Recognition in Roon on NUC ROCK (ref#N5LW7H)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

Tell us what's going on

· Roon version 2.57 (build 1598) production running on an 8th gen NUC (Rock), forget the model number but an approved model as per Roons list . The issue I'm having is very odd. Forgive my description, as I'm not that technical. I installed Roon on a NUC a few weeks ago. Previously I was running the legacy version on a Windows PC. When I moved to Rock and the new version of Roon there were some issues, all around network speed. I reported these problems (there were other network issues, not just Roon) to my provider, who visited a day ago and replaced the router. Since then my laptop has generally not been recognised by Rock as an audio source. I can open Roon on it, but it asks for an audio source and when I go into settings and audio its not there as an option to enable. I said generally as on occasion it is. However if I reboot its lost. I have tried rebooting the laptop, the NUC, the router, in many different orders and nothing works. I've tried uninstalling the Realtek drivers and reinstalling. I've set up static ip addresses for both the laptop and the NUC. Nothing seems to work, though, as I said sometimes after a reboot it appears again. Even though its only been a day of so I would say I have rebooted everything 30 times and on maybe 3 times the audio devices show the Realtek ASIO and WASAPI. Now another thing. I named both, the ASIO one as Dell Laptop (lossless) the the WASAPI as Dell Laptop. I reboot and they go from Audio devices. When they come back the ASIO shows as Dell Laptop (lossless) but the WASAPI only shows as that, the name has gone. Any advice gratefully received as I like listening to music through Roon while working on the laptop.

Hey @Alistair_Compton,

Thanks for sharing your report! If you could, please take note of the date/time you run into this issue and we’ll enable diagnostics to take a closer look.

In the meantime, if you temporarily disable your windows firewall, do you run into the same issue?

Thank you!

Thanks for the response Benjamin. Unfortunately yes, disabling the firewall both for the laptop and the domain, did not help the situation at all. I have three endpoints, a WiiM Pro, by phone (Android) and the laptop. The Wiim is connected via ethernet and is fine, the phone and laptop via wifi. Phone is always ok. Its just the laptop that is the issue. Its odd too that the laptop connects to the Roon server without issue, just won’t show it under audio most of the time. Screenshot below is of now, not showing as an option.

Hello @Alistair_Compton !

We were just able to analyze a report data from your Roon Core and can see that there are multiple records claiming network unavailability from ROCK’s side.

Can you please clarify the time of the issue with endpoints on laptop happening so we can narrow down the scope.

Thanks!

Regards.

I’ve just logged into Roon on my laptop now (9:44 am uk time). The laptop is not showing as an endpoint in Settings/Audio.

I signed out as user on laptop. Then signed in again (9:47 am) and after starting Roon Endpoints are showing. I have noticed that signing out and in again seems to restore them generally, but not always.

Hello @Alistair_Compton,

Thank you for the additional details and timestamps — that helps narrow things down.

Based on the symptoms, this still appears to be network- or startup-related behavior, rather than an issue with the audio drivers themselves. The fact that the laptop always connects as a Roon remote, but intermittently fails to appear as an audio endpoint, suggests that endpoint discovery or RAAT initialization is not consistently completing.

There are a few areas worth checking next:

Network / router behavior

Since the issue started after a router replacement, it’s possible that certain types of discovery traffic are being handled differently. This doesn’t necessarily mean traffic is being fully blocked, but it can lead to intermittent visibility of endpoints, particularly over Wi-Fi.

If available in your router’s settings, it may be worth reviewing options related to:

  • multicast or device discovery
  • IGMP-related settings
  • Wi-Fi isolation or “smart / optimization” features

RAATServer startup on Windows

Another possibility is that the RAATServer process on the laptop isn’t starting cleanly every time. In this case, the laptop can still function as a Roon remote, but won’t reliably advertise itself as an audio endpoint.

When the endpoint is missing:

  1. Please reboot the laptop
  2. Open Windows Event Viewer
  3. Check Windows Logs → Application and System
  4. Look for any warnings or errors around that time, especially ones related to audio services, network services, or RAAT
  5. Share screenshots of anything relevant here

Windows firewall / security software

Even when the Windows firewall is disabled globally, some systems still have:

  • per-app firewall rules
  • network profile restrictions (Public vs Private)
  • third-party security, VPN, or traffic-filtering components installed in the past

These can occasionally interfere with local discovery or with background services like RAAT.

Please double-check:

  • that your active network is set to Private
  • that there are no residual firewall rules or security utilities affecting Roon or RAAT
  • and let us know if any additional security or network tools have ever been installed on the laptop

Once we have the Event Viewer screenshots and confirmation on the above, we should be in a much better position to pinpoint where the interruption is occurring.

Thanks for this. I have checked my modems settings. Nothing looks relevant but included a sceenshot of the advanced options in case you think there is something in there that could be checked.
Re the Windows logs, I found a couple of warning ones that might be relevant so including screentshots of these too.

Hi @Alistair_Compton,

Based on your description, this sounds like a networking conflict that often happens when adding a Mesh WiFi system to an existing ISP setup.

If you have a Mesh system (like Eero, Orbi, or TP-Link Deco) plugged into your ISP’s router, you might have two separate networks running at the same time.

Even if you gave them the same WiFi name (SSID) and password, they are separate “zones.” If your Roon Server is plugged into the ISP box but your laptop roams to the Mesh WiFi, they can’t see each other. Roon’s discovery protocol (RAAT) requires all devices to be on the same “flat” network.

The most reliable way to resolve this is to consolidate everything behind one “brain” (the Mesh):

  • Move the Server: Plug your Roon Server’s Ethernet cable directly into your Primary Mesh Node, rather than the ISP router.
  • Disable ISP WiFi: Log into your ISP router’s settings and turn off its WiFi radios entirely. This forces your laptop to stay on the Mesh network and prevents it from “jumping the fence” to the ISP’s signal.
  • Reboot: Power cycle your Mesh nodes and restart your laptop.

By doing this, you ensure the Server and the Laptop are on the same subnet, which should stop the “lost connection” issues.

I’m just another Roon subscriber, and this is just a random guess. But I thought I’d offer a quick reply in case the issue is something simple. Otherwise, I’m sure Roon Support will get you back to listening. Good luck!

Hi @David_Snyder,
I’ve moved your post from the Feedback topic as it’s better located in the Support topic.

Thanks for the suggestion. However I don’t think this is the issue as I just have the one router, and no mesh.

Is there any update on this?

@Alistair_Compton,

Considering what has been happening in this thread, I suspect there is something wrong happening with the RAAT server on your Windows laptop.

Thus, we’d like to ask you for these few actions:

  1. Check the RAAT logson your Windows laptop and upload them to our logs storage so we can review them. (The folder with RAAT logs should be in the folder “RAAT_Server”)

  2. Please try to close all Roon instances on your Laptop and install Roon Bridge on your laptop. It is a standalone RAAT server that is used as a Roon endpoint to play the audio. Then, please try to log in from your phone or tablet and find your Windows laptop as an endpoint and try to use it. Is it stable enough?

After you do that, please let us know about your observations, and we’ll check on this matter.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have uploaded the logs. I have also installed Roon Bridge on my laptop. However my phone is not showing it (Settings/Audio). I have rebooted the laptop etc (and run Roon Bridge) but its still not showing.

Have you had a chance to look at the logs yet? Its been 6 days and I don’t want the case closed as happened last time?
