· Just startede using a Roon Nucleus one. I have a 1tb Seagate One Touch SSD containing 29972 tracks (3505 albums) connected to it. I am currently only using this local library. The Nucleus One is connected to a Auralic Vega DAC That is connected to My pre-amp. The issue is That every now and then the playback stops mid track, pauses for about 20-50 seconds, then continues with the following/next track. This is extremly annoying..... If I then returns and play the track That got cut off again it plays without Any issues, so No fault/ corruption on the SSD. The pausing and skipping is not happening consistently. Today it has been happening every third to fifth track. Yesterday it was not That frequently. I am using a 5g router as internet connection. Offcause it could be the router That is causing the problem, but prior to the Roon Nucleus one I have been using a laptop running Jriver without Any issues. I had intended to purchase a lifetime subscription to Roon, but I am not going to if I cannot solve this problem. Thank You in advance. Best regards Dan
Hey @dan.m.pedersen, welcome to the community, and thanks for the detailed write-up.
Playback stopping mid-track and then skipping ahead usually points to either a network interruption between Roon Server and the output path, or a problem on the server itself rather than corruption in the SSD library.
To get a clearer picture, a few things would help:
Is the Nucleus One connected to your router or switch? And is the Auralic Vega also wired, or is anything on WiFi?
When the pause happens, do you see any message in Roon, or does playback just stop and continue on its own?
Can you tell us whether this happens with local files only, or if it also happens when you play from a streaming service?
In the meantime, please try connecting the Nucleus One directly to the Zyxel router with Ethernet if it is not already, and if there are any power-saving or sleep settings on the router or D-Link switch, disable them for testing. If you can, also reboot the Nucleus One and the network gear once, then see whether the behavior changes.
If this keeps happening, we can enable diagnostics on your account and we ask you to note the exact local time, date, and track the next time it occurs so we can review what the server was doing at that moment.
Let us know what you find, and we’ll take it from there, thank you.
The Nucleus One is connected to My switch. As My router is a 5g router it is placed on a widow sill for Best connection and I would need a 8-10 mtr cabel to connect the Nucleus One directly to My router (witch I currently dont have). The Auralic Vega is the first ver. so it does not have a build in streamer (it is a DAC only).
When the pause happens I have not noticed any message in Roon. The playback just stops mid track, pauses for a bit, and then continues with another track.
The D-Link switch is plug and play without any possibility to acces it.
I have checked the Zylex router and No power or sleep settings are appllied.
I rebooted the Nucleus one, the router and the switch. Turned everything on again and everything was in god order and I listened to an album without Any issues. I was about to write you, saying That the problem seemed solved, but then the Music stopped…
So the problem is not solved…
As stated earlier I currently do not have a long enough network cable to connect the Nucleus One directly to My router. I Will order one. But for now I have tried everything Else That you have suggested without Any succes.
Thank You again for heling me out. I Hope it Will help to connect the Nucleus One directly to the router. I Will revet once I have tried that.
Thank you for clarifying. This isn’t expected behavior and we’d like to take a closer look at what Roon Server itself has logged around these interruptions.
However, the Nucleus One isn’t currently responding to our automatic diagnostic log requests. To fully illuminate this problem, we need to kindly request that you locate, zip, and upload the logs folder for your Roon database itself.
At your convenience, please use the directions found here to locate the RoonServer logs folder in your database location and upload it to our secure File Uploader? We’ll use this to pinpoint the dropout and provide a menu of options for how to possibly stabilize playback.
Thank You for your answer. Checking on My computer (Windows 11) using File Explorer I can not find anything Roon related at all. I also tried the search funktion, searching for Roon, but this only shows links to the internet. Again, My setup is as follows: Nucleus one connected to My DAC via USB and My DAC connected to My pre-amp. My Music is store on a ssd connected via USB to the Nucleus One. Finally the Nucleus One is connected to My switch That in turn is connected to My router.
My computer is also connected to My switch.
Also, the main reason why I puchased the Roon nucleus one was That I wanted a plug and play solution using Roon…
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate your help, I just didn’t think That I would need it.
Best regards,
Dan
P. S. I did a network search on My (Windows 11) computer - My amp showed up - But the Nucleus One did not.
I just got the Nucleus One a few days ago, and so far I have done the following when I wanted to add Music files. Turned off the Nucleus One, disconnected the SSD, connected the SSD to My Pc and transferen the files and then connected the SSD with the Nucleus One again and turned it on.
I have now connected the Nucleus One directly to My router.
No wifi is used.
No power saving/sleep modes are active.
I have changed the usb cable connecting the SSD to the Nucleus One, just to rule out a possible faulty cable (No change).
I have seen the following error message dispplayed in the Roon app:
Audio files loading slowly this May indicate a performance or hardware problem.
Playing Kraftwerk Tour de France this afternoon There where long pauses followed by skipping to the next track at 15:49, 15:58 and 16:09.
At the monent I am listening to Kraftwerk Computer World.
So far There have been the following long pauses followed by skipping to the next track :
Computer World at 17:12
Numbers at 17:28
Home Computer at 17:36 (All times are local).
I have also now downloaded Roon to My (Windows) PC.
I Will keep My PC on with the Roon app open, does this help you to access the Roon logs?
Just to recap the setup - I have a 1tb (external) ssd connected via USB (a Seagate One Touch) containing 29972 tracks (3505 albums) and I am currently only using this local library. The Nucleus One is connected to My DAC (Auralic Vega) That in turn is connected to My pre-amp.
I have tried to discribed the issues/problems thurrowly as I can. Should more information be needed Please let me know.
I really Hope you can help me out with this as I have no disire to go back to using a laptop running Jriver.
Thanks for the update! We’re actually not seeing any trace of your Nucleus tied to your account, and therefore we’re unable to request a diagnostic report from your Nucleus.
Gathering a set of manual Roon Server logs from the Nucleus would be the best next step, let us know if you’re able to do this.
If not, let’s see if you’re able to locate and connect to the webUI of your Nucleus, here is more information surrounding how to access the webUI:
You can also access the webUI by opening a web browser and trying:
I am not very good with computers - Hence my disire to want a plug and play solution.
At first I could not find anything on my PC. But after changing the ristrictions in my PCs firewall I could acces the below. Maybe you also have acces now?
Thanks for the screenshots! All looks well via your webUI, which is good news.
And no worries on the confusion around grabbing Roon Server logs! The logs we need live on the Nucleus One itself, not on the copy of Roon you installed on your PC. Here’s how to grab them from your Windows 11 machine:
Make sure the Nucleus One is powered on and on the same network as your PC.
Open File Explorer (the yellow folder icon on your taskbar).
Click into the address bar at the top (where the folder path shows) and type this exactly, then press Enter:
\\NUCLEUSONE\Data
If it doesn't open, use the Nucleus's IP address instead: \\<IP address>\Data (you can find the IP from the same screen you used to reach the Web UI).
If asked for a username and password, type Guest as the username and leave the password blank (if it insists, use Guest there too). Tick "Remember" if offered.
You should now see a RoonServer folder. Open it, and you'll see a folder called Logs.
Go back one step so you can see the Logs folder itself. Right-click it → Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder.
Rename the new .zip file to include your name — e.g. dan-pedersen-logs.zip.
Upload it to our secure uploader here:
https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/collection/nocvrfc5b2ddab55140af8640f1d7ce13291e/external
, then reply here to let us know it's done.
If \\NUCLEUSONE\Data doesn't show anything, turn on network sharing: Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Advanced sharing settings, and switch on Network discovery and File and printer sharing under the Private profile, then try step 3 again.
The dropout times you already noted (Tour de France 15:49/15:58/16:09, Computer World 17:12, Numbers 17:28, Home Computer 17:36) are exactly what we need, with the logs we can line those up and see what Roon Server was doing at each moment.
We’re here with any additional questions you may have along the way!
Thank you for uploading those logs, and for noting the exact dropout times, that combination let us pin down what’s happening. The good news is your logs are very clear, and the cause isn’t your network or your music files.
Every one of the dropouts you noted lines up exactly with a “slow media” event in the logs, for example your Tour de France pauses at 15:49, 15:58 and 16:09, and the later ones during Computer World. At each of those moments, Roon Server asked your Seagate OneTouch SSD for the next part of the track and the drive didn’t respond in time. When that happens for more than about 3 seconds, Roon gives up on the track and skips ahead, which is exactly the pause-then-skip you’ve been hearing.
A couple of things worth explaining:
Your Auralic Vega is plugged into the Nucleus One by USB, so the music never travels over your network on its way to the DAC. That's why connecting the Nucleus directly to the router and swapping cables didn't change anything, the network simply isn't involved in this part.
The stall happens a little way into a track, once Roon needs to fetch more data from the drive. Many tracks play perfectly, then one stalls. That on-and-off pattern is very typical of an external USB drive whose connection briefly drops into a low-power/idle state and is slow to wake back up. It also explains why replaying the same track works fine.
Here are some next troubleshooting steps to try:
Test playing audio to the system output of one of your Roon remote devices, and see if you experience the same issues.
Move the SSD to the other USB port on the back of the Nucleus One and see if the dropouts stop.
If you have another external drive handy, try loading a few albums onto it and playing from that, if it plays cleanly, we've confirmed the Seagate is the culprit.
As a longer-term option, the Nucleus One can also take an internal 2.5" SATA SSD (up to 4TB), which avoids relying on an external USB drive altogether. It doesn't come with one installed, and fitting it means opening the unit, so it's optional — but if you'd ever like to go that route, we're glad to point you to the steps.
Give #1 a try when you get a chance and let us know how it goes. We'll get you back to smooth, plug-and-play listening. 👍
Moving the SSD to the other USB port helped somewhat - But the problem was still there although not as often.
Transffered my music-files to a Toshiba 4TB external SSD. Have now been listening to music files for a couple of days without any issues
I will most likely add a internal SSD at some point, but as I allready had the 4TB Toshiba lying around this solution was costfree.
So to anyone thinking of purchasing a 1 TB Seagate One Touch external SSD to use with a Roon Nucleus One - Do not purchase as this particular SSD as it does not work well with the Nucleus One.
To Benjamin (and your team) Thank you very much for helping me out with this issue.
I can inform you that I now have purchased a lifetime subcribtion to Roon.
Great to hear the Toshiba drive has been working cleanly for a couple of days now, and welcome to the Roon lifetime club! We’ll go ahead and mark this thread for closure, and enjoy the music!
