I run Roon on a 64 bit Win PC i78700 cpu, Asus Z390i MB. It has operated flawlessly until a few months ago. Now the user interface does not open consistently on the computer with the Roon Server on it.
More often than not I get a dark screen with the Roon logo. Sometimes the program opens only to freeze. Other times it works.
I can still access the server and play music, I can play music through an endpoint. I can access the user interface on another computer. It just doesn’t work properly on the computer where the Roon Server is.
Describe your network setup
I have an Asus AC5300 router with an ethernet connection to the WWW and the computer with the Roon Server.
Most commonly, a Windows update automatically blacklisted one of Roon’s background or graphical processes in the Windows Defender firewall. Have you verified that RoonServer.exe and the other essential Roon processes are marked safe?
Thanks for your reply. Im not sure about the firewall so here is a screen shot. Is that what you are referring to? I have installed the latest video driver. Rebooted the computer. Unfortunately no change in the display behaviour. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for the suggestion. It appears to have worked. I found RoonServer in C/Users/User/App Data/Local/RoonServer/Application (RoonServer Application) and added it as an exception. See attached screen shot. On restart of the computer the Roon interface opened up as it should. Thanks for your help with this.
Please note, the logs we need to investigate this further are from the Roon folder, in addition to the RoonServer folder, so please be sure to include both sets.
Thank you, for those instructions. I have uploaded the logs. I think the 10/09/2024 9.23pm log is the one where the interface opened and worked, Roon Log 03. Please let me know if you need anything else.
Do you have any screen scaling taking place on the device? From a recent Roon diagnostic report, we’re seeing the following trace:
Debug: ScaleChanged: 1.25
I’d be curious to see if you disable any window size scaling, if your issue would persist? In addition to this, lets see if removing the saved window position file in your Roon instance may help:
Close Roon
Navigate to: C:\Users(username)\AppData\Local\Roon\Database\Registry\Client\
Note: It may require enabling “show hidden files and folders” to see this.
There you should see the file: saved_window_pos.
Rename this file to saved_window_pos.old, restart your computer, and launch Roon then try to duplicate your issue.
Let us know if this doesn’t resolve the issue for you.
Hi Benjamin, thanks for your reply. You asked:
“Do you have any screen scaling taking place on the device? From a recent Roon diagnostic report, we’re seeing the following trace:
Debug: ScaleChanged: 1.25”
The answer is no. I do not use any screen scaling on that computer. I have never needed it. So the trace is interesting.
You said “Close Roon. 1. Navigate to: C:\Users(username)\AppData\Local\Roon\Database\Registry\Client"
It reminded me of this conversation in Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy: But the plans were on display”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“Thats the display department.”
“With a Flashlight!”
“Ah well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice didnt you?”
"Yes, yes I did. It was on diplay in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying “Beware of the tiger!”
Anyway thanks. I found it, did the edit and, touch wood, it seems to have fixed the issue. I have restarted the computer three times and Roon has launched properly each time. Thank you!
If there is a simple explanation as to how this occured I would be interested to know the cause. Thanks again. You are awesome!
Glad to hear that the troubleshooting step resolved the issue on your end! I would like to dig a bit deeper to see if we can figure out what happened to cause this in the first place, so I wish to run your case by the team to see if any additional info is needed to debug what happened before marking this one as solved.
Hi Noris, thanks for that. I took the liberty of uploading another set of logs so you can see what happened yesterday (called Peter Treyde 2 zip). Interestingly yesterday I accessed Roon from an endpoint. When I came back a few hours later the interface on the computer with Roon on it had frozen and would not open. Restarting the computer fixed that. I am grateful for your time and effort on this.
Thanks for letting us know! We were able to discuss the issue further with our team, and we believe enabling advanced diagnostics for your Windows machine may provide further insight into what might be causing the errors in your screen freezing.
If you experience the issue at all over the weekend, please share a date, time or name of track playing for our team to further examine.
Hi Benjamin, I had a couple of more freezes yesterday and today (Saturday 14 Sept, around 8.00am here in sunny Australia. Basically I switch on the Machine open Roon, wait for the interface to load. Then click play, it doesnt seem to matter what track. Sometimes the screen freezes befor playing starts, sometimes I can select and play a number of tracks. I have enabled Windows diagnostics and copied the CSV file, I will stick it in with the log files and upload as Peter Treyde Logs 3.zip. Not sure if this is worth a mention, the screen itself is an old Acer touchscreen though as I mentioned previously there is no scaling applied. Have a good weekend cheers.
Hi, thanks for that. I have restarted Roon and RoonServer twice. No change in behaviour. On the first start up a dark screen/window, as in my first screen shot at the beginning of this thread, the next try just generated a pure white screen/window. Now, third time, its flashes a dark screen and then simple displays a white screen/window with Roon in the upper left corner. Let me know if I can provide any further details. regards Peter
Thanks @Peter_Treyde, would you also be able to share a set of manual Roon logs (not Roon Server) from the issue windows machine? You can use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon logs to our File Uploader?
Another question: can you recall which (light or dark) display theme is active in your windows remote instance of Roon?
Hi Benjamin, I have uploaded the log files. “Peter Treyde.zip”. I use the windows dark theme and the dark theme for Roon on all my machines, including this one, and the (problem machime) the one with Roon, Roon server etc. cheers
