Describe the issue
It’s random but when I search for an artist (Michael Franks) on Qobuz and hit play, it starts to play but every few songs it’ll just play static. I can skip and sometimes the next random song will play and sometimes it’s static. This doesn’t happen when I play local FLAC files and it just started about two weeks ago. I’m using an iPad as an endpoint (iOS v17.7.11) and the current Roon Rock.
Describe your network setup
Unifi network (UDM PRO, PRO MAX 48, Enterprise 8. Roon Rock running on a GMKtek N97 Rizen NUC
Can you please share a screenshot of the Device Setup page for the iPad System Output?
Please also share a screenshot of the Signal Path for the Qobuz file/format type that tends to present this problem. The Signal Path is fully transparent to the digital chain.
Audible artifacts won’t really occur in Roon unless the data source delivers scrambled audio data and RAAT has been configured to let it pass. This is highly uncommon unless you have a DSD configuration or some sort of heavy DSP.
You mentioned a ROCK in your description, but our diagnostic servers indicate another operating system associated with your account (Mac/Windows). ROCK is a dedicated RoonOS headless server; are you hosting Roon on a desktop or laptop computer? We just want to clarify that we’re inspecting the correct logs.
We take reports of audible artifacts seriously and don’t want this thread to auto-close without any follow-up.
Have you experienced this issue since you first posted about it? To proceed with this investigation, we’ll really require a screenshot of the Signal Path in Roon while you’re playing to the problematic iPad.
Otherwise, this ticket will close automatically without any responses.
Hi @Everett_Spain, thanks for the Signal Path screenshot!
It shows the zone isn’t using the iPad. Main Listening Room plays through diretta-host to the AnCaolas Link (Diretta) over ALSA.
We went through your Roon Server logs, and the pattern is very consistent. Every 24-bit/192 kHz track sent to the AnCaolas Link fails.
Earlier ones caused the Diretta device to drop out entirely (device_not_available). More recently, like Monterey on 10/09, the endpoint’s clock ran at about a tenth of real time, which shows up as static. Everything at 96 kHz and below, including DSD, plays normally. The same Qobuz 192 kHz content also plays fine on your Eversolo zone. Your local library is all 16/44, which is why local files never show the problem.
As a quick test, could you go to Settings > Audio > AnCaolas Link > Device Setup and set Max Sample Rate (PCM) to 96 kHz? Roon will then downsample 192 kHz tracks before sending them.
If the static goes away, the issue is in how the Diretta host/target handles 192 kHz. In that case, it’s worth checking the Diretta software, the AnCaolas Link firmware, and the 192 kHz settings on that side.
We’ll be monitoring for your reply and results, thank you!
Hey Benjamin I made the change to 96kHz and also lowered the sample rate to DSD64. I should’ve known this because a recent update to the Diretta kernel mandated I dial it back to 96kHz. Not sure if the sample rate change matters. Now I just to find tracks causing the issue. I’ll keep you posted. Really appreciate the relatively quick help or should I say reminder.
