Internet radio some URLs seem not to work any more [Resolved]

I have been using the URL http://mp3.streampower.be/klara-high.mp3 for a Belgian radio station “Klara” since I subscribed to Roon, but since some days this does not stream anymore. I tried this station on Tunein (https://tunein.com/radio/VRT-Klara-904-s69286/), but streaming is not regular. When I retry the first url, Roon gives me “Roon could not find this url” when saving.
Could you help me? This radio station is quite dear to me.

Roger

Hi @Roger_De_Croock ---- Thank you for the feedback and the PM.

Typically we handle any support related question in the “support” thread on the community site, so others have access to any information or troubleshooting tips being shared, should it be useful. In light of this, would you mind if I made this PM a public topic and we can continue you from there? Please let me know.

Furthermore, can you please provide me with the details of your setup, using this link as guide, this way I have a better idea of the gear you’re implementing

Lastly, I clicked on the first link in your PM and I am unable to access it via Roon OR web browser. Are you certain this is a working URL? See below for the error.

Hi Eric,

No problem in sharing this info.
My setup is as follows: a headless MacMini, 8GB RAM, 250 GB SSD running the Roon core, a USB connected Chord2Qute handles the DA conversion to my amp.
And you are right, the URL that used to be working before, is not available anymore (got the same error 404). I will contact the Station distributor tomorrow to ask what is happening. When using the above TUNEIN url, there is a constant frequency rumble throughout the music (and very poor quality), something I do not have on other stations.

Roger

Hi Roger, use the following URL’s:

http://icecast.vrtcdn.be/klaracontinuo-high.mp3
These are the new URL’s for MP3 48kHz 16bit 2ch 128kbps.
VRT streaming links can be found here: https://www.vrt.be/nl/aanbod/kijk-en-luister/radio-luisteren/streamingslinks-radio/

Hi Wim,

Thanks, I tried that, but still keep having bad quality and a pulsing low frequency noice (like a motor cycle running on the background). BBC3 or Audiophile Jazz for instance ar crystal clear. The same problem I also have with the other vrt.be radio stations (Radio 1 for instance) although they used to sound very well before. I will contact VRT.

Roger

Hi Roger,
All vrt.be radio stations are crystal clear on my system.
Regards,
Wim

Eric,

In the mean time I have tried the following: I switched off Roon and put the url http://icecast.vrtcdn.be/klara-high.mp3 directly on the Safari of my MacMini. With that setup the streaming to the Cord 2Qute DAC is perfect again. As soon as I try the same with Roon, the problem of pulsing noise and bad quality is back again.
I also contacted Widescreen Audio, who actually gave me the tip to try the above setup. Can they also be informed at henk@widescreenaudio.be?
What can I do from here on?

Roger

Hi @Roger_De_Croock ---- Thank you for the continued feedback and more importantly, thank you for you patience.

Moving forward, I have tested with the mentioned URL (from your latest post) and have been playing without issue for the last 2hours, roughly. My testing was performed on a MBA with USB mounted DAC (Ps Audio PerfectWave).

Furthermore, I would like to see if we can isolate some variables here to determine where this issue is residing. With this in mind during your troubleshooting have you tried…

  • Testing with a different DAC?

  • A different USB cable?

  • Connecting a pair of headphones to the mini and playing via the “system output”?

  • If the MacMini is accessing your network via WiFi have you tried testing with the unit connected to your router via ethernet?

-Eric

Hello Eric,

Many thanks for your suggestions.
I have both tested to change the USB cable as well as to connect the headphones directly to the MacMini, but the problem persists. Unfortunately I have no spare DAC at home, so I could not test that.
As for the ethernet connection: the MacMini is connected to the network directly via a switch. WiFi is out on te MacMini.
What I remarked lately is that when switching on a radio station Roon gives me “select an audio zone” although 2Qute is indicated on the screen as the selected zone. After retrial connection gets restored.
Another experience: I also have a Naim Mu-so audio system, which is connected to the same network receiving a optical input via an airport express. Roon streams the same radio stations correctly that seem to be problematic on the 2Qute streaming via usb.

Roger

Hi Eric,

After a day leaving everything untouched, I tried to stream Klara on the url http://icecast.vrtcdn.be/klara-high.mp3 again, and it works perfectly now. Beat me, I do not understand, and just hope the problem will not reoccur.
By the way I did not find this (my) topic back on the roon community, but I am unexperienced and may have overlooked it.

Roger

Hi @Roger_De_Croock2 ---- Thank you for touching base with me and sharing this most recent observation. I am pleased to hear that the URL is playing as expected. I am gong to be closing this thread, but, if the issue returns, drop me a PM and I will re-open to continue troubleshooting with you.
