I fell down the audio “rabbit hole” seeking better audio than my Apple iTunes was providing. Apple is super easy but the experience feels a bit subpar in terms of audio quality…and I am an Apple fan-boy. I have learned a lot along the way on this forum and hope to solve a few issues that I am experiencing…

1) On windows 11 Pro I don’t see the Roon Nucleus One as an external drive to transfer music too. I added a Samsung 4tb SSD drive to the nucleus internal and was able to get Roon to recognize it and format the drive on the Nucleus Web Administration Interface. I was not able to add music folders to it. I tried looking for it as an external drive on windows and I also tried adding a folder from within Roon software (Settings > Storage > + Add Folder).

2) Software isn’t playing music (issues with Select an Audio Zone). The PC used to be my server prior to purchasing the Roon Nucleus 1. The software worked great in this state. When I setup the Nucleus, I selected forget the PC as the server and choose the Nucleus as the new server. Great…well not yet. So now I can’t play anything on the iPhone, iPad or the PC. On the iPad & iPhone if I hit play a playlist nothing happens. At the bottom of the screen it says, Select an Audio Zone. I think easy enough. If I select an assortment of Sonos speakers along with the playlist to play, nothing happens. I turn up the volume, nothing. The track doesn’t appear to move (no time track count-downs down). It’s just frozen. I’ve tried rebooting devices and closing programs to refresh them and nothing happens. Sonos app AND Qobuz app work fine, BUT not Roon…yet.

3) Sonos speakers are all jacked up on Roon. I have about 10 Sonos speakers around the house that all work with the Sonos app AND Qobuz app BUT not Roon. For example, Patio speakers are two Sonos Ones paired together in stereo. It doesn’t show a pair withing Roon. It shows as separate speakers (just 2 speakers, no left or right, just duplicate). Also where did my DAC go on the PC? It used to be there within Roon. It shows and works in Qobuz app on PC. I have checked the PC’s Audio Settings…that’s not the issue. It’s there and works fine with Qobuz app and is recognized as my main audio output. It’s an Rme ADI-2 DAC fs.

4) Roon ARC inop. I tried looking for it as an external drive on windows and I also tried adding a folder from within Roon software (Settings > Roon ARC). It self tests and says, “Not ready”. I try to trouble-shoot and I get a button that says, “Start troubleshooting”. I read the linked page. I can cut and post the Diagnostics data for Roon Support when you are ready for that. Because it’s not work here…the Roon Arc app is not working as well.

I understand that this is a lot of questions but I suspect some may be related, so that is the reason that I gouped them together in one post. Thanks in advanced for your patience and any help.

David

Hi @anon24397150,
Thanks for reaching out to us about these questions. I’ll go through them one by one.

  1. It looks like you want to move your local library onto your Nucleus. You can follow the steps in this article. Let us know if that helps with this question.
  2. This question will take some investigating. To start can you reproduce the issue and let us know the date and time that it happens. We can use that information to track down the issue in your logs.
  3. To diagnose the issue here can you tell us more about how the Sonos endpoints are connected to your network (i.e. wi-fi or ethernet and any network hardware like switches between your router and endpoints. Just to do our due diligence have you enabled the Rme DAC in the Audio settings of your nucleus?
  4. Usually when ARC shows a not ready status there is an error message showing what the issue is. Can you share thaqt with us?

You can also try working through this Nucleus troubleshooting typeform which should help you solve at least some of the issues you are facing. Nucleus Troubleshooting

Yes…10/7/24 all evening. Anytime after 6pm eastern, I could only play music with any device if I used the Sonos or Qobuz apps on any device. So Roon wouldn’t let me play anything on any device.

Network setup here: NBS AT&T BGW-320 500 802.11a/n/ac/ax (AT&T Fiber Optic) → Cisco Business CBS110-24T Unmanaged Switch → EERO Pro 6E (x5) → Roon Nucleus 1 → Windows 11 PC, iPad Pro 13 and iPhone Pro (via Wi-Fi).

Sonos connects to Wi-Fi. The Apple TV’s connect via ethernet.

The Cisco is an unmanaged switch and is connect as per the network setup above.

Have I enabled the RME DAC in the Audio settings? Yes, but it no longer shows there.

On the nucleus? I’m not sure how to do this one. To be clear, it’s not just the DAC on the PC. It’s also the iPad and iPhone…although everything is working in Qobuz and Sonos apps on all devices, including the DAC as an output.

Well I went into Roon Settings → Audio and found my Roon Nucleus 1 (output) ALSA. I selected the cogwheel for changing the settings and a window pops up for Device setup…loading…loading…loading. 20 minutes later still loading. I am going to reboot the Nucleus to see if this helps…

What confuses me about this walk-through is that they are assuming you have your full library already in Roon. I have it setup for backups already. How do you add music from your non-roon music folders? Backing up your Roon to Dropbox is the only option that is available to me. If I try to download a backup right onto my PC, it won’t show it as an option. What about my iTunes backup folders? What about my my other folders. I’d just like to bring over all my music onto the Roon. I bought a 4gb drive so that I could do that.

Roon backups are for the database only, not music files. Keep in mind you cannot do a database backup to the internal drive, you need either an external USB drive, or, a network location like your PC.

Also, you probably will not be able to restore a Dropbox backup directly. You will have to download that backup to another PC, copy it to a drive and then move it over to run the restore.

You need to setup a Share on the PC, and then make sure the Nucleus points to that Share as a location to backup the database to.

Thanks for the explanation Dan. That clarifies it for me. Why even have an internal drive then? Do most people not use an internal storage with their Nucleus?

Hi @anon24397150,

Many users do use the internal drive to store a copy of their local library! Here’s more info :+1:
