Describe the issue

Search text is invisible, including the cursor. I can type in the box and hit return and the search works. I just can't see what I'm typing. My database is Nucleus rev B. My problem is with the Windows PC app. My search text is visible on my iPad and iPhone. I've tried rebooting multiple times PC and Nucleus. I reinstalled the app on my PC, and restored the database from a backup, but the problem persists. I reset the Windows Search service and looked for other fixes on my PC with respect to text display but nothing has helped. Please advise.

Describe your network setup

Nucleus rev B database server all updates installed; Xfinity Gateway model XB8, revision 2.0; range extender Tether model RE550 connected directly to Nucleus with cat5 cable.

Helo @Ross_Rabin

Thank you for the detailed report. I wasn’t able to reproduce the same issue on my side, which suggests this may be related to your Windows configuration rather than Roon itself.

It’s possible that a setting around fonts, regional format, or text rendering in Windows is affecting how the search box displays. Could you please check your Windows font settings and regional format preferences, and share screenshots of those settings here? That will help us better understand what might be happening on your system.

For the record, I have observed this, but not consistently. It appears to occur after repeated attempt to refine the same search.

Hello @vadim – thanks for the reply! I agree that this is likely a Windows configuration issue. FWIW, I haven’t changed any configuration settings at all on my PC that I’m aware of, especially in the interval between Roon search text working correctly and the invisibility problem beginning. I tried rolling back Windows update to a time before the problem started and it didn’t fix the problem. I checked all the settings I could think of, related to the topics you suggested. All the settings appear to be default settings. Here are some screenshots:

Hi @Ross_Rabin ,

You’ve mentioned you tried to reinstall Roon on thh Windows PC, but did you try to set the previous database aside when reinstalling? To do this, please try the following:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • On the affected Windows PC, exit out of Roon + RoonServer if running (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a Windows machine:

All Roon_old on Windows

Hello @noris – Thanks for the suggestion. My Roon database is running on a Nucleus rev B, not on my PC. I do see that that my PC has a Roon database installed but I am not using it. I’m only using the Roon UI app on my PC. That’s where the problem with invisible search text is happening. The Roon Nucleus database is performing fine and search text on iPad and iPhone is visible and working normally.
Given this situation, do you have any other suggestions for a reinstall of the Roon app on my PC that might address the problem?

Hello @Ross_Rabin,

Thank you for the details. Based on your description and the information shared by @mjw, this does appear to be a potential Windows client bug.

Could you let us know if the issue occurs consistently on your end, or only under certain conditions? It would be very helpful if you could outline the exact steps or actions leading up to the problem so that we can attempt to isolate and reproduce it internally before passing the findings along to our R&D team.

At this stage, a reinstall might not fully address the behavior if it’s indeed a client-side bug, but this is something that we should try now as the next step.

Hello @vadim – The invisible text box issue is consistent. At first I thought it was only searches, but it happens all the time in all text boxes, regardless of any conditions. For example, I just renamed an audio device and the text box did not display the cursor or anything I typed. The naming of the device did work, I just couldn’t see what I typed.

Hi @Ross_Rabin,

If possible, could you please capture a screen recording of when the issue occurs?

Then, upload it here:

Noting the specific date and time would also be helpful - we’re attempting to pin down and isolate the exact behavior to better reproduce on our end.

Thank you! :raising_hands:

Hello @Ross_Rabin ,

It’s been a few days so I wanted to check in with you here if you’ve had a chance to create the screen recording? Please let us know when you’ve uploaded it and we can proceed with troubleshooting, thanks!

Hello @noris – I just created a video demo of the issue and will upload it to the link you provided. The audio narration did not record very well so I hope you can hear it okay.

Hello – FWIW, my PC is a Lenovo IdeaPad ARM64-based PC. The processor is a Snapdragon(R) X Plus - X1P42100 - Qualcomm(R) Oryon™ CPU, 3244 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s). I’m not sure if this makes a difference versus a a “standard” Windows 11 64 bit PC, but I hadn’t provided this information previously.

Thank you for posting that you have a Snapdragon PC. I’ve got a Surface Pro 12 - also Snapdragon-based - and I can confirm that the Search text field is invisible here as well. Example: Search text is Bruckner - not that you can see it…

Thanks for the input. What’s interesting is that it was working properly for almost a year before this problem appeared in the last few weeks.. I tried rolling back to an earlier Windows update which didn’t help. Perhaps rolling back to an even earlier update with fix the issue, at least as a temporary fix.

A proper solution (IMO) would be for Roon Labs to issue a version of Roon built for ARM-based PCs, as they have done for Apple Macs.

Perhaps you could add your vote to this - it could do with some love:

I wonder.. I have seen somewhere (I don’t remember where) than Roon Remote is made with C#. In this case, there is no really “native” version of remote, like for Java. Can someone confirm C# ?

I have the same issue: in all text boxes there is no cursor and no text visible when the input field has the focus. When the control loses the focus the text is visible again.

I have this behaviour on 2 windows machines (Snapdragon) since a few days (can’t tell up to which date it was all ok). Android clients are working correctly.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the report. We have a ticket in the pipeline to address this particular bug in the GUI in Snapdragon Windows environments.

To assist with development’s investigation, can you please clarify the following?

  1. If you highlight text you’ve entered in the Search Bar, does it become visible?

  2. Do you have Dark Mode engaged in Settings?

Thanks!

Hello @connor – Here’s my reply:

  1. If you highlight text you’ve entered in the Search Bar, does it become visible? >> If by highlight you mean select, the answer is no. Is there any other way to highlight the invisible text?
  2. Do you have Dark Mode engaged in Settings? >> No. I tried Dark Mode and back to Light Mode and nothing changed.

@connor - my answer is no to both questions. Thanks.
