iOS App Refreshes/Reconnects to RoonServer in a Loop

I am having the same sort of issue. Roon app on iPhone/ipad fails to detect library and then flicks as it visibly refreshes every 20-30 secs

Only happened since the recent update.

@James_Christie - the best course of action is always to open your own Support request and describe your setup in detail if you want help.

You may have a similar symptom, but not necessarily the same cause as the original poster - your system setup may be different, that’s why the general rule is to always first open your own request. Let the Support team merge threads if they find common causes.

Hi @James_Christie,

I’ve moved your post to a dedicated thread where we can troubleshoot directly.

Please navigate to the Nucleus Web Administration page using a browser on device on your home network. Do you see any errors presented? Please share a screenshot here.

Diagnostics from the RoonServer machine that are visible to our server do indicate that it’s re-scanning the library in a loop. Reboot your Nucleus. Also close and reopen the Roon app on your iOS devices.

We’ll proceed from there. Thanks!

Thanks for that. Although I had rebooted it a few times as well as restarted the Roon app on all devices when the problem was going on, it has now stopped misbehaving.

I wondered if it had to do with starting a session on one device and then managing it on a second or third. I have done this all the time in the past.

Anyway we will call it an unresolved mystery event

James

Describe the issue

App is looping and reloading on all controllers, Iphone, Ipad and IOS Mac.
This is a recurrence of the issue that I notified you of last week. The app cycles and keeps on reloading. At the same time my other controllersalso have trouble accessing the Roon Database. i get the message that the controller can not see the server. I rebooted the nucleus twice yesterday. In the past it has been on for months with no problem.
This has only been an issue since the last software revision. Never seen it before

Describe your network setup

Synology NAS, Nucleus, apple and IOS controllers,

Hi @James_Christie,
I’ve reopened this topic and merged in your new report so all the history is together.

I’ve also tagged @connor so he is aware.

Hi @James_Christie,
Can you please provide the information that @connor requested before?

Is this what you want? I can’t see any errors, but after a reboot

Hey @James_Christie,

Thanks for the follow-up! As a next step, I’d like to see if this issue is database-related, as we’re seeing some oddities in the recent Roon Server diagnostic report, pointing to Roon having some difficulties scanning your library. Follow the steps below and let me know if you experience the same issue on a completely fresh database:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon Database
  • Stop RoonServer from running in Nucleus’s WebUI
  • Navigate to your Nucleus’ Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Restart the RoonServer in the WebUI to generate a new Database
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database

Don’t restore from a backup immediately - test things to see if your connection is stabilized first. :+1:

I have done this except, I dont know what this "On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database" means.

I can not see that command anywhere.

I restarted Roon and it seemed to have albums and happily played away. What am I missing

Also I do not understand what you mean about restoring from a backup or indeed how to do that. what you mean about

Also in my Library Folder I had a folder called Roon and one called Roonserver ( now renamed to Roonserver_old). Is this how it should be?

Hey @James_Christie,

It sounds like you performed a database refresh on a instance of Roon Server running on the Mac itself, not the Nucleus. Is that correct? Or, did you perform the following to access the database on the Nucleus:

  1. Using a Mac, open Finder and navigate to smb://NUCLEUS/Data and use Guest as the username and password. You should then see the RoonServer folder. Alternatively, you can also copy smb://NUCLEUS/Data and paste it into Spotlight and select the Finder result to prompt connection.

To confirm, you’re no longer running into issues after refreshing Roon on the Mac? If so, you may not need to perform a database refresh from your Nucleus.

Let me know! :raised_hands:

Looks like your are correct. Now that I reflect about it, I followed the link, saw the heading that said MacOS and did not think it through properly, that the Database was really on the Nucleus

Nonetheless It is now running smoothly. I had developed a lot of lag when accessing albums and that repetitive refreshing thing was unworkable

All gone now so happy. I will try to break it over the next few days and if it happens again do the proper database backup, rebuild

Thanks for your help

James

Ok. Very short lived happiness here. Gone tits-up again.
It misbehaved.
I went through the proper process of new database, finding the folder in the Nucleus, and that all did its thing.

Happily played music from NAS and Qobuz. I was using the iphone and the my Macbook as controller.

I then picked up the Ipad and looked for albums and it fell apart, Lost connection to Server, hunting reloading and when they did reload they were in alphabetical order despite the selected Date Added. Have had to restart everything to get it working again

On reflection this has occurred possibly every time in a hand over from one controller to another - something I have been doing happily for years

Hey @James_Christie,

Sorry to hear you’re still having issues!

If you could, please see if the same issue happens after restarting Roon Server?

I restarted everything, including shutting down all controllers ( Iphone, Ipad Macbook).

played some tracks using the iphone as controller, went to the Macbook. All going swimmingly. Opened the Roon app on the Ipad and it fell over. None of the apps on the other devices were responsive all though the selected track still kept on playing and I could stop it.

I have just restarted the server software. Went with the Ipad first and everything ran. Opened the app on the iphone and it goes to crap. I have the feeling the this new version of Roon software sees them as the same device and gets confused. Never happened before.

Now to another issue. the new constructed database is a mess as none of the album corrections I made before have carried through. What is the process to go back to the old database that I backed up early on in this process? Given that it seems to be not the cause of the problem

James

Hey @James_Christie,

Thanks for giving that a try!

Head to Roon Settings>Backup>Browse and select your backups folder. This will then open a new window showing you all your available backups - select the most recent and you’ll be able to restore your database. :+1:

As a next step, can you please provide a more specific date and time, and track playing if applicable, and then please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs from the affected device to our File Uploader?

Thank you!

HI Benjamin
Thank you for ongoing help here.
I reproduced the issue tonight. @9:32 AEST Oct 4

Reset all devices and Nucleus.
Used Roon remote on Iphone to listen to a few tracks.
Then opened Roon remote on MacBook to listen to a few more. Last one playing was People Aint no Good (Nick Cave).
I then attempted to open Roon Remote on the Ipad. As soon as I did this the data on the Iphone disappeared and the message was " trying to connect to Roon Server " Same message on Ipad. Track continued to play but Roon remote on Macbook also non responsive.
Log Files sent just now

James

Thanks for sending those logs over. Can you also do the same with the logs from your iOS device that’s losing the connection? The instructions @benjamin sent before also contains the instructions for iOS.
