iPhone and Macbook can't find Roon Core

Roon Core Machine

Doesn’t matter as I can’t connect. On both ethernet and WIFI. Not using VPN.

Connected Audio Devices

I’m trying to connect my iPhone and Macbook, but neither can seem to find the core.

Description of Issue

All of a sudden my two other devices I use to play music with have stopped working. Can’t seem to find the Core on my iMac no matter what I try (reboot, update, turned off ethernet). I’ve started looking for ‘another core’ on both iPhone and Macbook but still can’t find the Core and have little clue what to do next. Problem is as simple as can be and there’s not much more to it. Didn’t change anything in terms of netwerk settings etc. Everything else is working as should be in the house. Roon Core does still connect to my Raspberry Pi if I start playing music from the room my iMac is in, so have trouble understanding why both the Macbook and iPhone don’t work.

@Derk_Weijers, welcome to the Community. What version of Roon (Version and Build Number) do you have installed on your iMac for the Roon Core, and what version(s) of Roon do you have installed on your iPhone Remote and MacBook Remote? They need to be on same version for the Remotes to connect to the Core.

Does your Core work correctly? Can you play music on your iMac Core to the iMac’s speakers?

Finally, are all the Macs and the iPhone on the same network?

Hi @Robert_F, I’m using Roon 2.0 (1272). I can’t check for the phone and Macbook because I can’t connect to the Core so can’t see the About section… But no reason to suspect it’s anything different as it was working fine the other day.

Core is working fine as can use Raspberry Pi in the other room with no problem.

All devices are on the same network.

Thank you @Derk_Weijers. Can you please post a screenshot of your iPhone or MacBook when it is trying to connect to show what you are seeing?

Just the normal opening screen but nothing happens

And what are the IP addresses of the iMac with the running Core, the iPhone and your MacBook? I take it that your iMac’s Firewall is allowing traffic to and from your Core to pass through (it should be, because your RPi is working as an endpoint)?

Hi Geoff, thanks for chiming in. All devices are on the same IP address. Firewall is explicitly allowing traffic from Roon on both the Core and Macbook.

The same IP address?? Or do you mean in the same IP address range (subnet)?

Same subnet, yes!

Then I’m out of ideas. Something is clearly preventing your iPhone and MacBook from seeing your Core.

Are you using a Netgear Orbi router? I noticed this in the Networking Best Practices article:

If you’re making use of an Orbi router, we recommend unchecking Disable IGMP Proxying in your router’s settings. This setting can interfere with the ability for Roon Remotes to connect to the Roon Core.

Hey @Derk_Weijers,

Welcome to the community indeed! You have my apologies for the long delay in getting to your thread and issue.

Are you able to provide more specific information around your network? Is your core hardwired directly to your router?

If possible, could you bring your core back online so we can enable core diagnostics to take a closer look? Alternatively, you could reproduce the issue and use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader.

Lastly, I’d be curious to see how things run on a fresh database. Steps to follow below:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

I’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:
