Hello @derrick.loftus

Thank you for reaching Roon support while we’ve diligently worked to reach every request for support with port forwarding. The diagnostics you’ve provided suggest that UPnP is not properly configured on your router.

Please first try the following steps:

  • Try to enable UPnP/NATPMP in the web administration interface for the router directly upstream from your RoonServer
  • Try to manually open the port in your router’s port forwarding configuration
  • Make sure the IP/Port matches the Port listed in Roon → Settings → ARC
  • Check for any VPNs or Firewalls that might be interfering
  • Check if your modem is in Bridge mode

If you continue to experience difficulties, please tag the support team and include the following information:

  1. What is the make and model of your modem and router?
  2. Do you have any additional network hardware, like additional routers or managed switches?
  3. Who is your internet service provider and what is your geographic region?
  4. Is your Modem configured in Bridge Mode so that it operates only as a modem or do you have the ports forwarded on both?

Hi @derrick.loftus,

Do you have a second router in this setup other than the Netgear Orbi main unit?

If you rely on a gateway (modem/router) provided by your ISP, you’ll need to ensure that unit is in Bridge mode. Port forwarding won’t work if there are two active routers betwen the Nucleus and the broader internet.

Your ISP might also have implemented CG-NAT at the provider level, which would prevent port forwarding from working. Please let us know if you’re still having difficulties and we can suggest alternatives (like Tailscale).

Thank you!

Hi @derrick.loftus,

This thread will auto-close shortly without any new response from the OP, so we want to ensure you’re equipped to troubleshoot moving forward.

For port forwarding to work, there must be a single network address translation (NAT) layer between your RoonServer and the internet. Every active router will introduce a NAT layer (unless you have it in Bridge/AP mode), and your ISP can sometimes introduce their own NAT layer in the form of CG-NAT.

Tailscale is an alternative to port forwarding - if you choose this path, you won’t need to worry about NAT layers or how many active routers you have.

Thank you!
