Yep, I tried to encourage @brian to hire the uapp guy. If you emailed him with any issues he’d get right back to you, but I imagine a much lighter lift than all of what Roon has tried to do. Come on @danny and team (looks like Enno is no longer in this forum), can’t we get some of that Samsung mulah to help make ARC work for all Roon users?
Connection fix
For most people with Roon Arc connection problems, I have found going into your Apps under settings, Roon Arc, Storage, clear data and cache. This seems to solve many issues with connections. Good luck.
If this solves Roon ARC connection issues, then there’s a bug in ARC. Why has this festered for so long without resolution?
I have only in the last week or so started to actively try out ROON Arc. I did so with some hesitation, as I remember a year ago many reported lots of issues with it, and so I didn’t really try it out.
However, I have to admit, the ability to have access to my own music collection (way over 100,000 files, many of limited and special edition albums (like special full film score releases not available for streaming or elsewhere) is really nice. I used to do a lot of business trips, not to mention that it would be nice to have access to all of my music (not just the maybe 400 albums in my car USB system) on vacation.
Now so far I have actually not encountered any problems. I installed Roon Arc on my phone, took it on the go, and listened to some of my music in my car and in the gym. What am I doing wrong?
You have waited too long ![]()
It has taken a long time but it is getting better and more reliable. Not every issue is solved (I STILL lose most album covers immediately in offline mode) but it has not let me down during travel for more than a year now.
So maybe in the end, it was good ARC soaked up all that development effort mentioned up there, because it paid off and I reap the benefits. ![]()
We have to remember that we are calling back to our own local server using our own internet and with most trying to successfully port forward. So many issues with providers, not all are the same.
What I will say is that Roon using Tailscale was a good idea and implementation. More so for people who used Tailscale previously. Even so, it’s so easy to setup with loads of tutorials around.
No excuses here. I think we all forget that we expect stuff to just work. And, that is fine when we use big company that have severs and we stream from them.
I really would recommend Tailscale to anyone. I have it purely so I could stream my own ripped blurays using Firecore Infuse. Now, I can stream my local ripped music too!
PlexAmp works perfectly for me without Tailscale but not Roon’s ARC. Roon’s ARC with Tailscale has still been too unstable to use. I will hopefully not waste time trying again with the new release, but let’s be honest: I’ll likely be wasting my time again on a poorly built product that worked when I first beta tested it but then they released it too soon. Sad.
I too have had reliability problems with ARC, but the last few releases have significantly improved matters. I’m using Tailscale.
IMO, it is definately worth another try.
Yesterday’s new release surprised me with its ability to pick up new music in CarPlay, without blank album covers on car start.
Today I tried arc for the first time and loved it. Roon is really great. The ability to play from my home library anywhere in the world this easy is insane.
I haven’t tried this. What exactly are you referring to on this?
I’ve not used Arc in a while except for offline. I have to use tailscale but I notice there are issues when it comes to connecting in certain areas.
Used to be, when you’d get in your car after using ARC not in your car, CarPlay would be a bit of a mess. You could not see album artwork for albums you added since your last trip, and music would not start playing immediately. This seems better now.
Roon ARC absolutely sucks for the user experience primarily due to connectivity issues (particularly if you own the nucleus or nucleus + because you cannot load a VPN like Tailscale onto either device). Problem statement: ARC stops working either intermittently or completely. I recently discovered that Roon Nucleus and Nucleus + users can use/downlaod Tailscale (VPN) onto their mobile phone & onto another network client device (like an Apple TV or any network home device-I think). And then assign the client device (Apple TV) as a subnet (gateway for those of us who have a nucleus or nucleus plus). You can then use Roon ARC with less drop outs or access issues. After much brain draining to get all of this sorted out via Chat GPT…I was able to finally get it to work. We shall see if this method holds up long term. I don’t think the user should have to do all of this to use the Roon library remotely. And I don’t have any financial urgency to purchase the nucleus one or the cost prohibitive Titan @ 3700.00 USD. I already purchased the Nucleus + which was supposedly the ‘best’ machine on the date of purchase.
Chat gpt can be a very bad guide for this. It’s best to read forums and such. Chat gpt can literally create new menus from thin air and then you’d spend hours trying to find those darned menus just to find they never existed in the first place. It’s garbage.
Chat GPT was accurate and provided the solution step measures required to set up ARC for remote use in my use case. Ex. Nucleus + & Apple TV with subnets via Tailscale. I don’t know that the Roon community has mapped that out…so I cannot speak with insight. I’d read on this forum that Tailscale will not work for nucleus or nucleus + machines. The solution offered by Chat GPT worked for me (bear in mind I’m only talking day one use😆). The OP was about how functionally convoluted ARC set up is for some users (ISP configurations, Double NAT & or port forwarding issues-to name a few). I don’t denounce or promote Chat GPT for anyone to use. It’s just the tool I used. The point is users simply want access to their Roon library remotely (while traveling or at work). It should be simple, obvious to troubleshoot, and reliable.
It depends. The version of RoonOS used in the Nucleus, that works with Tailscale is the UEFI one, not legacy. If you are on the legacy boot version you’d need to convert the machine to UEFI boot. Its a little bit of work, and might be beyond some people’s ability.
Well it’s a user discussion thread in Roon Software Discussion where there is zero expectation that they will respond - what’s to say anyway
