I have two systems both using the same Roon NUC core as follows:
PC controller running windows 10 > cat 6 connections throughout > switch > router > switch > NUC 8i3 linux running Roon core.
Laptop controller running Windows 10 > wifi connection > router > cat 6 connections for rest of network > switch > NUC 8i3 linux running Roon core.
Networking Gear & Setup Details
The router is the TalkTalk fast wifi hub. All other network connections are working perfectly.
The switch is an Innuos Phoenix Net. I tried bypassing it but that did not restore connection to the core.
Connected Audio Devices
The audio devices are not relevant to the problem.

Description of Issue
My NUC was working perfectly until the internet connection was turned off. After turning the internet connection back on, my control screen just says “waiting for remote core”. My NUC has both green lights illuminated either side of the network port; the front “on” button is illuminated blue; and the amber “cylinder” symbol on the front also flashes. The NUC and switches are normally turned on 24/7.
I’m not support, but just curious, so I’ll ask a few questions.
What operating system are you running on your NUC? Is this a ROCK build with Roon OS? If not, what are you using?
If you have a ROCK build, can you reach the web user interface. When you enter the IP address of your Core into a web browser, you should see something like this:
If you can get to the web interface, try using the red button on the top-right to reboot it. You could also press the power button briefly, wait until the unit switches off, and then press it again.
For troubleshooting, it may be helpful to connect the HDMI output of the NUC to a TV or monitor so that you can see any error messages that might show up during or after boot.
Hello David
Thanks for your prompt response. Please forgive my very limited IT skills. As I am running Roon on the NUC I assume it is Rock/Roon OS. I do not know the IP address of my core. Nevertheless, I tried connecting my laptop to the core via HDMI but nothing showed on screen. I tried with two cables in case one was faulty. I also checked my screen while rebooting the NUC but nothing appeared on screen.
Thanks again for your help.
Yes, that is what I did. My laptop has a keyboard and screen. Nothing was displayed. I expect I have to activate something by giving a command. Kindly advise.
Er, are you saying that you connected the HDMI output on the NUC to the HDMI output on your laptop with an HDMI cable?
If so, then that won’t work - the clue is that they are both outputs. You want to connect the NUC HDMI output to the HDMI input on a monitor or TV…
Power down everything on the network including your modem wait a few mins then on the modem and router wait a few mins then turn on the Nuc and any other equipment. Try to connect then.
And when I say turn off I mean at the power point too not just the power button on the Nuc etc
Thanks everyone for your help. I have now connected the NUC to a monitor and got the address http:192.168.1.12/. After putting that into my search engine I got a display similar to the one that David posted above. Operating system, database, server software and internal music storage were all showing as OK. I then re-booted twice:
“error device has not rebooted”
“error could not be rebooted check network connections” After that I did a reset of my router and turned the NUC off and on. This is probably important. I noticed that the NUC is now showing one green and one amber light at the network port instead of the customary two green lights.
After this, my PC lost connection with the NUC, and Windows diagnostics said that “device is not responding” although it confirmed that the computer connections were fine.
I spoke too soon. After the earlier triumph I then turned off the NUC, re-instated it in the system in its usual position and had no signal. I then did another power re-cycle of the router and NUC as above but still no connection. I now have two green lights at the network port and a flashing amber symbol on the front panel. I will be grateful for any further ideas.
After what I thought was a solution the NUC has again lost connection. I have power cycled again twice but this has not solved the problem. I would be grateful for nay further suggestions.
Can you describe how your network is wired? You mention having a Talk Talk modem and an Innous Phoenix switch - how are these connected, and how are the rest of your devices connected? Is the Talk Talk modem this one?
Hello Geoff
Thanks for your response. Yes, that is the TalkTalk router I have. It is functioning perfectly for all other connections including this PC, wifi tablet and mobile phone.
My system 1, described above, should be the least prone to issues as everything is hardwired with cat6. It goes as follows:
PC > switch > router > switch > NUC
Both system 1 and system 2 display the same problem of no connection to the NUC core.
I tried bypassing the Innuos switch when using system 2 (only one switch involved) but this made no difference. I could try bypassing both switches as a test. I should add that the first switch, a Bonn 8, used as part of system 1, is providing a good internet connection and allowing me to type this post.
It may be helpful to you to know that when I was connecting the NUC and then inserting the address in my PC for the diagnostic screen described above the system went as follows:
PC > Bonn 8 switch > router > NUC all hardwired with cat 6. This is the arrangement that temporarily connected with the IP address 192.168.1.12 and also temporarily streamed via Roon.
