Before I start, I love Roon. I have discovered more new music in the last 2-3 years using Roon than I would have using anything else. However I do wonder iof thats been to the detriment of my mental health.
Every day it seems I have issues. Yesterday Roon search stopped, today it appears that it cant get music from my Tidal account. 2 days ago the Roon IOS app getting freezing and it goes on and on.
I recently changed my connection set up from using a mesh network to direct to the ISP. I have Roon core on a dedicated server that is plugged into the router. I have 1 wifi extender in the house and yet everyday i have these issues.
I am not a techie but I do love my music and I’m starting to wonder whteher its all worth the hassle or I should percevere.
Ive looked into trying to up my Wifi, router etc but my current provider seems to have me over a barrel in that I cant plug in a 3rd party router to the feed.
I’m just at a loss and I wonder whether the whole thing has been completely over engineered to a degree where I need a degree in computers to listen to my music.
There is something wrong somewhere in your setup. I don’t have a degree in computers and Roon has worked perfectly for me for 5 years. I have Roon servers on a Roon Nucleus and Mac Mini (late 2014) at home and Dell XPS 15 laptop away from home. My internet is AT&T U-Verse fiber 300/300, but Roon also worked perfectly when it was 50/12.
I suggest you post in the Roon Support catagory and ask for help. Make sure you fill out the requested information as completely as you can so Roon and other Roon customers can help you get to the bottom of what the problem(s) is/are.
Thank you. I had the same issues at my other house and I have a different set up there, still with the server connected to the router, but just other endpoints.
My Nucleus and Mac Mini servers are both connected by ethernet to an unmanaged switch then ethernet to my U-Verse gateway (modem/router). My main listening room is connected by WIFI to an RPi4. I also have two end-points connected by ethernet. I don’t use any mesh networks or WIFI extenders, etc.
Away from home, my Dell laptop server is WIFI to two iPads and an iPhone using Speedify cellular internet bonding.
Ziggo (Netherlands) ISP cable modem/router → ethernet cable → my own ASUS router → ethernet cable → unmanaged switch → ethernet cable → Linux laptop running my Roon Server is the network path Roon travels here.
In the past the Roon Server was installed the same way first on a 2017 MacBook Air, later a 2014 Mac Mini and finally a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro running either MacOS or Linux.
I’ve never had issues this way. Not with Roon ARC on my iPhone or my endpoints. Although my Cambridge streamer really needs to be on Ethernet as it has a tendency to drop its wifi. My Bluesound Node X happily plays from my wifi all day. The same goes for any wireless speakers that I occasionally use. My ASUS router handles all the network traffic.
It does seem to me that you’re having network issues somewhere. I’ve had them when I started out and had both my Roon Server and endpoints connected to wifi only. Even with >700 mbit network speed and full strength wifi signal Roon dropped out a lot. Probably courtesy of the neighbours wifi interference. It’s nice living in an apartment block I guess.
Roon works best with as many endpoints connected to Ethernet as possible. But definitely the Roon Server has to be Ethernet connected.
There’s no mention of Windows or macOS in your OP, and based on the symptoms, the likely cause is the network.
