Is the much lauded Opra dead? [No, it is routinely updated]

This appears to be true, if a specific headphone PEQ has been modified in the underlying database.

Does the value “Preamp Gain” - in this case -6.8dB - have to be added to:

Use the slider in the PEQ screen to adjust preamp gain. This way the adjustment only applies to that PEQ setting. The headroom adjustment will apply the gain setting to everything going to that endpoint regardless of PEQ setting chosen.

Yep, this requires no headroom adjustment :+1:

Although, I do set headroom to 0 and enable the clipping indicator and enable the DSP.

Having it set to zero and the clipping indicator active and this DSP active/enabled will give an indicator if you need to adjust the gain more.

As you have VL on then this isn’t likely to happen.

I don’t have access to that PDF file. Is that a PDF you created or does it was it created by someone like oratory? If it comes from oratory or autoeq it’ll get include automatically.

@Stephen - where was this “announced”? There’s nothing about this that I can find on the Roon Labs website - nothing in the Resources section and nothing in the Help articles. Even searching on “Opra” produces zilch results…

Slightly off topic, but a hand grenade to the Opra idea or anything like it.

I’m a life-long audiophile, always searching for better sound through speakers, gear, placement, recordings, etc, though it has tailed off a bit. Over the last few years I’ve noticed myself tweaking the equalizer on ROON to boost the treble because something’s just not there anymore - cymbals, high ends of vocals, ambience. Then I noticed I wasn’t catching all the conversation when I was out to dinner with friends.

Long and short - I went in to get my hearing tested. Age-related hearing loss. Here’s a chart of my hearing test. Check out the frequency loss - down 30dB over 2000Hz! And they told me this is fairly typical loss for someone over 65.

What does this have to do with OPRA? The equalizer settings for the earbuds I got last year that I tweaked until they sounded just right would be completely useless to someone else. Imagine how much treble boost I’ve added just to bring the curve up to neurotypical “normal”. This audio test showed me that unless the uploaded eq settings are machine-checked for flat response on each brand of earphone, one person’s eq settings very likely sound like garbage to someone else.

Not a lot.

The EQ in Opra optimizes frequency responses for headphones using a target such as the Harman curve.

It is not used for hearing correction. However, you could apply parametric EQ to boost frequencies (which is what modern hearing aids do.)
