Issue loading user's library (ref#BIRAUY) [Ticket In]

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· simple one 192.168.0.x , connected to fwa router. everything was working perfectly until 27/4 mind affternoon before the update. Pc running win 11 , 64 bit. library on a usbc drive. i tried to remove, reinstall, delete the roon folders in appsettings and restoring the backups up to 1 month ago from 3 different sources. same backup on a new machine , restored, produces the same result.

What format is the USBC drive?

Have you unplugged it and re-plugged it in lately? If so, was it ejected properly?

Have you tried scanning the drive for errors and fixing them?

Interesting to say that i found an old Roon 2.0 on another pc, downloaded may 2025, and it ingested without any problem the backup from yesterday. now as supposed, roon is showing the banner to update to the current version. should i do that?

  • it rescanned automatically the storage and found all the songs.

Should i update and there is a bug in the current version?

Update on the previous one. updating through the banner from version 2.0 May 2025 to the latest, broke again everything. So I guess latest version has a problem.

Title: Roon 2.65 (build 1653) – Backup restore fails (“Issue loading your library”), works on older versions

Summary:

After updating the Core to Roon 2.65 (build 1653) on April 27, all my backups fail to load with the error:

“There was an issue loading your library”

What I tested:

  • Fresh install of Windows 11 + Roon → works fine (empty database)

  • Restoring any backup (multiple backups, different locations: USB drive, USB key, NAS) → same error

  • Issue is 100% reproducible

  • Backups span ~1 week before the update → all affected

  • Problem started immediately after Core update

Key finding:

  • If I install an older Roon version (e.g., pre-2.65), the same backup loads correctly

  • As soon as the Core updates to 2.65, the database becomes unusable again

Logs (relevant excerpt):

[broker/accounts] error loading account data:
System.InvalidOperationException
at Sooloos.Broker.ObscureHelper.Unobscure(Byte[] data)

Additional notes:

  • Clean database works → issue only affects restored backups

  • Happens even on a completely clean OS install

  • Not tied to a specific storage location

  • Network shares temporarily offline does not change behavior

Conclusion:
This appears to be a database migration issue or incompatibility introduced in 2.65, since:

  • backups created on previous version load fine there

  • same backups consistently fail on 2.65

Request:

  • Can support confirm if this is a known migration issue?

  • Is there a way to repair the database or provide a patched build?

Happy to provide full logs if needed.

Roon 2.65 build 1653 fails during library load after restore.
Database opens successfully, account/license succeeds, then fails at:

Warn: CompressedPath exception: System.FormatException:
The input is not a valid hex string as it contains a non-hex character.

Critical: Library.EndMutation: System.NullReferenceException
at Sooloos.CompressedImageUri.ToString()
at Sooloos.Broker.ImageCollection.TryGetBestImage(…)
at Sooloos.Broker.Music.LibraryPerformer._Load(…)

IsLibraryLoadFailed False => True

I have this exact problem after “upgrading” to the latest, super-duper version, immediately got this error message. Note that I have suspected my library has been corrupt since my last ticket (ref#PMXQPW), which was never fixed and closed abruptly only a few hours after my last reply.

It says it may have to do with custom group or band images…

found and installed last monday version, restored backup. all perfect.
stopped auto updated to the last version with host file change and dns.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

0.0.0.0 download.roonlabs.net
0.0.0.0 updates.roonlabs.com
0.0.0.0 updates.roonlabs.net

So is not automatically (sadly) updated.
Hope for a fix on the issue to upgrade

Hi @Fulvio_Salanitro,

Thank you for your report. We’re escalating this to engineering and will respond with more information as soon as possible.

Are you able to compress/upload a copy of your Roon database here to our uploader? This will be the RoonServer folder itself.

How did you roll back, and where.skv

@connor am i allowed to share the procedure and in particular the official public link to download from your side the correct version? I see only the latest is published everywhere an it took me a good 2h to fin it. let me know. more than happy to provide the workaround then.

@connor db uploaded + logs server

Hi,

I have experienced the same issue with the latest update of Roon at my Win11 install. None of my backups worked after the update and I tried to reinstall Roon several times but without success - I even tried to install the new docker version at my Synology NAS, but the same scenario here after upload of my backups…

I really look forward to a solution

I will note that my Roon server is trying to do something. Although there is next to no activity on the server machine, the log is being updated with hundreds of entries saying similar to “04/30 06:06:10 Info: [stats] 2151148mb Virtual, 760mb Physical, 438mb Managed, 322mb estimated Unmanaged, 1362 Handles, 33 Threads, 0.01% of runtime in GC pauses, 2ms last GC pause duration”

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· Windows 11 machine.

After "upgrading" to version 2.65, I get the "Unhappy laptop of death screen" saying "There is an issue loading your library". Restarted, no luck. As there is literally nothing I can do within the app then, I tried reinstalling, same error. I then tried installing an older version, however then my library only showed tracks from Tidal. Tried importing the last backup, took maybe half an hour, with absolutely zero improvement. Note the database and server were different versions due to your refusal to provide downloads of older versions of the app.

So now nothing is working. I guess I have the choice to rebuild the database, if I want to wait a week for it to update and then spend another month finding and fixing the thousands of albums it incorrectly or simply doesn't identify. In all honesty, it is just easier to play the CDs, and they sound better too.

· Wired Network, not really relevant as the issue happens when accessing the app directly on the same PC as the server.

I have made some mention of this in Issue loading user’s library (ref#BIRAUY), however the issue doesn’t appear to be exactly the same so made this request.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your patience and for taking the time to upload databases. The team is investigating urgently and will respond here with more information and next steps as soon as possible.
