Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

Tell us what's going on

· I am unable to restore my library after migrating from 1 account to another (I had 2 by mistake). I am able to retrieve back up and it appears to work but when I log in, my files aren't there and roon starts re-importing.

Hello @anon61702597 and welcome to the forum.

This is by design, as Roon databases are account bound. So backups only work for the account they were created with. There is currently no way for Roon staff to overcome this hurdle and merge two accounts. See also:

Hi @anon61702597,

Diagnostics seem to indicate that you have several redundant Roon Server instances installed on top of one another on this network across your machines.

Since you have a reliable Backup, on whichever machine(s) you don’t intend to use as your server, please take the following steps:

  1. Close both Roon and RoonServer

  2. Locate your Roon database in a file browser

  3. Delete the RoonServer folder

Let us know if this helps.

Thank you. How many are you seeing? I had to change my Rock NUC to another because of hardware failure. I’m not sure how to address that in terms of removing those files.

Hi @anon61702597,

We see an older instance on a desktop that hasn’t been active for some time, and then multiple iterations of a ROCK that likely reflect different Backup restoration attempts over the last few days.

Roon’s architecture can get confusing when multiple accounts are involved, but here’s what’s happening: When you restore a Backup under a different Roon account, Roon treats it as a brand new database. Roon can use the Backup as a starting point, but anything account-specific gets left behind.

In practice, that means your streaming services (Qobuz, Tidal) will disappear and need to be re-linked as if it’s your first time, and any local music will be re-scanned as a new storage location rather than recognized from the backup. You’re essentially rebuilding your library using the backup as a skeleton, but the account-linked data doesn’t carry over.

To fully restore your backup, you’d need to be signed into the same Roon account it was originally created under. Is that account still accessible to you? If you need to merge your accounts together to prevent this from happening, simply let us know and we’ll reach out via email with next steps to ensure privacy.
