Describe the issue

Roon asks for Airplay2 pin for Sony TV when enabling. After entering the pin in Roon settings the pin prompt remains on the screen and when pressing play there is another pin prompt. Chromecast output to same TV works fine. AirPod Mini on same network works fine via AirPlay2.

Describe your network setup

HPE Aruba 1960 switch and AP25, Roon server and TV are on the same VLAN

So in conclusion, Roon > Sony TV Airplay 2 is the only combination that does not work and asks forever for pin. Roon > HomePod Mini Airplay 2 works, also Roon System output from iOS/macOS > Sony TV Airplay 2 works.

@mlp, can you set the Sony’s AirPlay setting to Requires Password instead of Requires PIN?

Hey @mlp,

Thanks for writing in! Were you able to give @Robert_F’s suggestion a try?

I’m sorry to say, but VLANs unfortunately fall outside the scope of Roon support - would you be able to test out functionality across your local LAN?

I did try enabling airplay password in Apple Home app and it made no difference. Roon asked for airplay password and could not connect. Sony TV airplay app has ask pin once option grayed out after I added the TV to Apple Home. Only second option before adding it to Apple Home was ask pin always which I did not try.

I guess I can move roon server back from vm to nuc/rock for testing if you think tagged and untagged vlan ports somehow affect roon behaviour.

For me, it looks like a airplay2 client/server implementation compatibility issue between sony tv and roon.

I will test again and report back with rock attached to same untagged LAN ports as sony tv.

Current Apple Home settings (I also tried everyone with and without password - that made no difference)

Hi

I added the Rock NUC back to the same untagged vlan where Sony TV is and it behaves identically to the Roon Server vm that is using tagged VLAN. Chromecast just works and Airplay is asking for pin each time I try to pair or play to it from Roon and does not play.

When I set the TV and speakers to require password on the same network in Apple Home, Roon will ask for password, shows the pairing dialog for a few minutes and then claims TV is paired. But TV airplay endpoint does not start playing when pressing play.

I also installed one available update on the TV and redid the getting started procedure and gave all the data sharing permissions to Sony. It did not resolve the issue.

Would it be useful if I provide Roon server and Airplay debug logs from the TV?

with best regards,
Martin

On a positive note, ARC downloads are really fast now when compared to the times when ARC was introduced. Albums are literally flying to the phone over wifi now in original flac quality.

Hi @mlp,
I will open a ticket with the dev team about this as we’ve had casting issues with Bravia TVs before. We will get back to you when we have more information.

Hi @mlp,

Could you please reboot your Roon Server twice, and then reproduce the issue?

Please share the date, time, and if applicable, name of track playing at the time of the issue.

Thank you!

Hi @mlp,

Thanks for the timestamp.

It’s unclear if you’ve moved out of the VM environment - can you please confirm if this is the case? Please understand that we need to keep things tied to a normal local LAN environment while we continue to troubleshoot. I appreciate your understanding here

While our team investigates further, lets perform a RAATServer database refresh. You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

Let me know how things go after the above. :+1:

Hi Benjamin,

I set up a separate test instance of Roon Server on a NUC11 computer running latest Rocky Linux 9 (that was previously running ROCK) on the same LAN as Sony TV and disabled the Rocky Linux local firewall for the test. I set up a separate Roon trial account and imported only local music files and connected to Tidal subscription (I did not restore backup from main account to rule out any settings related issues).

The results are same - Chromecast to Sony TV works, Airplay2 to Sony TV asks to enter Airplay pin on the TV screen and Roon play action just waits and stops after a few minutes.

Please let me know if you need any additional logs or testing.

Here are the Airplay app details on Sony TV:

I have exactly the same problem with Sony TV repeatedly supplying new pin codes everytime play is pressed in Roon. I was never in a VLAN or VM and I have ROCK installed on a nuc.
And yes, everything is on the same network.
Chromecast was never a problem on the Sony tv. I also have 5 other Chromecast devices that streams roon effortlessly.
