I am trying to report an issue with Metadata. I have tried to respond under that option here. However, in trying to enter the information, I am faced with this question: "are you having any problems that do not involve metadata?" I have to choose one of the given options. Every option is a problem. But I have no problem. It does not allow me to say "No". Indeed, it says "type or select an answer" but if I type "No", then it does not recognise it, and I cannot go any further in the help process. I have no problem with Roon apart from the metadata issue I'm trying to report. But this is simply not an option. What gives?
For the record, the matadata issue I wish to report concerns the album: “Schlippenbach Plays Monk”.
There are two alobums with this name. One from 1996 which is a trio date with artists Ino Nobuyoshi and Sunny Murray, and one from 2012 (INTAKT CD 207) which is a purely Solo appearance.
Roon thinks they are both one and the same, despite having different years of publication, different artist line-ups, difference labels and etc.
I have re-tagged files, and tried my darnedest with the metadata options Roon allows to make it clear that there are two albums here. But still, Roon insists on saying they are the same, grouping them as versions, and providing the same Tivo review for both albums (even when some of the other changes, like data, do finally get shown).
The most useful thing at this point would be a tip on how to ungroup them as versions of each other.
Thanks for the feedback on the metadata typeform! Our team will take a closer look into that today.
As a first thing to test - what happens if you set “Show Hidden Tracks and Albums” to Yes? Does this separate the albums for you?
Try this:
Open the grouped album
Click the Versions tab
Click the three-dot menu (•••) next to one of the versions
Choose “Remove from Group” (this unlinks the albums)
Let me know if this helps!
Can you share a screenshot of the file tags you’ve attempted to use? Have you differed tags around the following areas:
Album Title → Add a distinguishing note (e.g., “Schlippenbach Plays Monk (2012 - Solo)”)
Album Artist → Double-check for accuracy
Release Date and Label → Ensure these are correctly filled
Afterwards, try a full re-import (with prefer file selected) rather than a force rescan to see if there’s any changes.
If none of the above helps, perhaps testing out completely separating the albums to separate subfolders within your storage location may help - the folder structure could help influence album grouping.
Thanks so much for your timely and comprehensive help suggestions (and my apologies for the irritable tone earlier!)
Here is what I have tried in response - although to cut to the chase, nothing has changed.
I selected show hidden tracks and albums to yes. No change.
I tried to access the “Remove from Group” option you indicated, but when I go to the versions tab, while the two albums are grouped, the three dot menu is whited out and not accessible.
On both albums I have used Yate to retag the name of the album - one adding “Solo Piano” the other adding “Light Blue”. I also added these into the containing folder for the albums. On the solo album, the only artist/album artist is Schlippenbach; on the trio album, all three artists are listed as both artist and album artist. Release Date and Label are differentiated.
I have done a full delete and re-import (with prefer file for metadata) of the 2012 album (the one being wrongly described). I have also moved it to a different subfolder in the Roon directory.
Unforuntatley, none of these changes have stopped the grouping behaviour or prevented the wrong Tivo review from being displayed.
I look forward to seeing if you have any further comments. Thanks again.
Thank you for the report and our apologies again for the inconvenience. We’re in the process of overhauling our metadata reporting and you had the misfortune of encountering the intake form in an ugly, in-between phase. We’ve since resolved the issue, but we’ll of course take this report from here on Community.
We’ve inspected the available metadata sources Roon is using to populate this album and need to escalate any discrepancies to Tivo for correction. “Prefer file” unfortunately doesn’t restrict Roon from consulting metadata sources for enrichment, so the only heavy-handed solution here would be to manually edit the fields for correction using Edit Album on the Solo album.
Please allow us a chance to confirm internally and we’ll follow up with next steps on our end. Thank you!
