Issue with Roon on Synology NAS connecting to BACCH-SP after IP address change (ref#FXOMK2)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I'm having trouble getting Roon on a Synology NAS (DS923+) to connect to my BACCH-SP, which is on the same network. It was working before, but I had to turn my whole system off (at the power) for house renovations for three months, and when I turned it all back on again, the ip address of the BACCH had changed, so the existing zones no longer worked.

ip address of Synology NAS = 192.168.68.70, ip address of BACCH-SP = 192.168.68.80.

Two other existing zones (MSB Renderer Mk2, and Anthem 540, both on same network) still work. And I can find the BACCH on a network map (actually two network maps). I've gone into Windows Firewall on the PC and allowed both raatserver.exe and Roon.exe through - but as the actual server is on the Synology NAS, perhaps the problem is there?

But I don't know how to check that. I've also contacted Theoretica (BACCH) for advice.

Tell us about your home network

· It's a Deco mesh, with 6 endpoints (overkill). The Synology NAS and the BACCH-SP are both hard-wired to different satellites. The MSB is hardwired to the same satellite as the BACCH.

Hello @Graham_Thorburn1

Looking closely at your server logs, we found the exact reason for the connection failure.

The logs show that Roon is trying to connect to your BACCH-SP using the HQPlayer protocol, but it is looking for it at the old IP addresses (192.168.68.71 and 192.168.68.67). Since the BACCH-SP received a new IP address (192.168.68.80) after the power cycle, Roon is essentially knocking on the wrong door.

Because the BACCH-SP connects via HQPlayer rather than being natively Roon Ready, its network configuration is managed in a different menu.

To update the IP address and restore the connection, please follow these steps:

  1. Open Roon and go to Settings > Setup.
  2. Scroll down to find the HQPlayer section.
  3. Click Add HQPlayer and enter the new IP address: 192.168.68.80.
  4. Once the new IP is added, navigate to Settings > Audio. The BACCH-SP should now appear correctly as an HQPlayer zone, and you can click Enable.

Please give this a try and let us know if it gets the music playing again!

Thanks Vadim. I’m away from the system for a couple of days, but will try as soon as I return and confirm the outcome. As I can open Roon on multiple devices, presumably it doesn’t matter which device I use?

Hi @Graham_Thorburn1

Thank you for the update. No worries if the thread is closed by the time you get back, please feel free to open a new one.

Yes, you can use any remote.

Fixed, working, thanks. I’ll save this in case it happens again at some future time when I’ve forgotten the advice!

Hello @Graham_Thorburn1,

That is fantastic news! I am glad to hear the music is flowing again.

To save you from having to remember this workaround in the future, the easiest permanent fix is to set a Static IP (sometimes called “Address Reservation”) for both your BACCH-SP and your Synology NAS.

You can do this right inside your TP-Link Deco router app. This tells your mesh network to always assign those specific devices the exact same IP addresses, even after a long power outage or network reboot.

Since the issue is fully resolved, I will go ahead and close this thread. Please feel free to open a new one if you ever need assistance in the future.

Happy listening!
