Issue with updating Roon on QNAP TS-464 (ref#CKFTN1)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Dear support team
As I was running Roon Server on an obsolete QNAP TS-453 Pro (120 years old, no twelve), I bought and installed a QNAP TS-464. Roon is running better than ever, but there seems to be one little problem. I got the message that there was a new version ready to be installed. When I hit update it looks as if something is being downloaded. Then I get a message that the new software is being installed, which is then followed by a message that 'that a problem occurred during the download'. Encouraged by some post on the forum I tried severals times hoping that my network (like in that post I mentioned) had had some glitches. Of course I will be trying again, but apart from the messages that there is an update I can not find a 'spot' in the Roon interface to 'force' a search for software updates. I must warn you that due to my age (68) I am actually lagging behind in digital skills, so PLEASE keep it simple..... Thanks a lot!

Hate to tell you this but Roon will no longer run on your QNAP without additional action on your part. You need to install Docker in a Container on your QNAP. You can find the instructions in the QNAP section of the forum. I was running Roon on a 10 year old TVS-471. I had been thinking about buying a new QNAP when the changes happened and ended up buying a Nucleus.

There was a Roon update earlier this year that required reasonably up-to-date system software, and it transpired that the QNAP operating system runs some severely outdated parts.

The solution was to run Roon in a virtualized container, which is now the officially supported (and only possible) way to run Roon Server on QNAP. You will find a guide here:

If you have questions or run into problems, post them here and official support or someone from the community will help.

Hi @Harm_Kersten,

As @Suedkiez mentioned, the update error on QNAP usually points to the current install path no longer being the right one for Roon Server on that platform. The supported way forward now is to run Roon Server in Docker on the NAS, using Installing RoonServer on QNAP with Docker.

Please follow that guide on the TS-464, and if you still see the download error after that, let us know the exact message you get when the update fails. It would also help to know whether Container Station is already installed and whether Roon Server is currently running inside a container or from the older native setup.

Thank you, and let us know what you find.

Dear Noris and and whom it may concern,

Thank you for you reply. As some time ago my Roon Server seemed to have quit altogether, I took the endeavour of installing Docker and Roon Server. In my opinion and experience a troublesome and bumpy road. Judging the huge number of alarmed Roon user that suddenly found themselves ubnable to update their software in the “usual” way, I am convinced that Roon should prepare these kind of fundamental changes more cautiously. One moment updating Roon was a matter of ‘click and go’ and the next minute it takes ‘advanced experience’ in adjusting your NAS and finding out about the idiosyncrasies of Docker. The concept of ‘containers’ was absolute abracadabra to me (up untill that moment). The guides provided assume a level of expertise or at least a level of experience that many Roon users lack. Again, judging the number of cries for help.

I realize that Roon and its support team cannot take very individual user by the hand. (Although I must admit that you make a seriously good effort!!! Thank you for that!!!) But I think it would have saved us all a great deal of frustration and a lot of trouble if things had been prepared more carefully. Believe me, going about this more cautiously, is an essential part of the user experience. I am very enthusiastic about Roon, but this kind of thing really puts me off.

Having said all this, once again I compliment you on the level of support you offer, and the wonderful audio streaming interface.

Hi @Harm_Kersten,

I’m glad you were able to get the Docker install working, even though the path to get there was a rough one.

Thank you for the kind words about the support and the interface. We hear your feedback on the QNAP update experience and appreciate you taking the time to spell out where the process felt unclear.

We’ll go ahead and mark the thread for closure, but just let us know anytime if there’s anything else that isn’t working right, and we’d be happy to help, thank you!
